My new yamaha oem pistons don't have an arrow on them. What is the front? The have the "spare" hole the is perpendicular to the wrist pin hole. Does this spare go on the exhaust or intake side?

the ring locating pins always go to the intake side of the cylinder on ANY 2 stroke engine.

I can do that.

Rounded edge of the ring goes up right? Is there a difference in the top and bottom rings? I don't think I saw a different part number or anything.

there is usually a marking on the flat surface of the ring (T) and that will go facing up.no difference between top and bottom.

There should be some kind of mark stamped on the ring, that goes up.

also make shure you check ring end gap,if you need the spec let me know.

?? you can get rings upside down?? uh oh LOL. I've never paid attention to that and can imagine i've got a few upside down... but no problems. I don't think it's that important, but i'm not exactly a motor genius

When it comes to rebuilding a motor you have to pay attention to marks and arrows and you have to know where to look for then.Your rings will have a T on them so put it facing up.There is a risk you take in saving a few bucks in rebuilding your motor in what we call the back yard. Some guys win and some well,go through a few pains.

Yes you can DEFINATELY get your rings upside down and it DEFINATELY does make a difference. I was helping a buddy rebuild the engine in his sx, and you wouldn't believe it but one of the rings was stamped on the wrong side, and we could not get any compression on that cylinder. Tore it down 4 times before i looked at the profile of the ring and realized that the rounded part was up. Flipped it over and problem solved. The "T" was on the wrong side on that ring set.

The manual stresses it too. I found the marks. I put the bottom end together last night and hope to put piston and such all on tonight. Looks like snow tomorrow. Not enough to ride, but cold enough to start it up this weekend hopefully.
