I saw a thread recently that someone had suggested using a chemical cleaner to dissolve the carbon quickly. Cant seem to find it, does anyone have the info? Thanks,

you don't want to strip the coating off the valves tho! i soaked mine in gas and then used a scrub brush (plastic brissles) and brake cleaner to get the rest. also a razor blade works good to get the hard patches and the thick stuff off as well, just don't gouge them or take the coating off.

yep gas works great, also im sure desiel fuel might wrok really good also. I found a fine scotch bright(red) works well with gas an dI used a very thin razzer blade( about 3 inches by 3/8 took it out of a cheap knife) for the rough stuff, I used a thin blade so it flexs easy so you can bendit when your scrapping to keep the tip away from the valve to avoid scratching.

Paint stripper doesnt take off the coating, eats all the goop right up though.
Use oven cleaner
I use oven cleaner, let soak 1hr and wipe clean, then wash with water and soap, may use a crubpad if need be...

Thanks for the replies. was looking for the recent post that a solvent dissolved the carbon off after an hour. I have used the gas and oven cleaner and was looking for an easier solution. I"ll try the paint thinner.
I have used a combo. of sea foam, carb cleaner, easy off oven cleaner, aircraft paint stripper, a scotch brite pad and a plastic scraper.

you can take your fuel line off the fuel tank and add an extension tube to it and suck a QUART of AUTOMATIC TRANS FLUID through your fuel pump, carbs, and WHOLE MOTOR when you put it away for the summer and your POWERVALVES will be BEAUTIFULLY CLEAN when you start it up again in NOVEMBER!!! NO stabil, seafoam, paint thinner or ANYTHING ELSE!!! The ATF cleans your whole motor up BEAUTIFULLY and SMOKES LIKE HeLL when you start it up in November!!!! it keeps your motor FOGGED and your carbs SPARKLING CLEAN!!! A quart of CHEAP ATF costs around $2.00!!! Gary Oles nosboy
hey 2 datrl.. How does that concoction smell????? How long does the plastic scraper last???

Nosboy, you are taking compression out of your engine that way by cleaning the carbon off the pistons and heads. Free Compression!
Thats a drawback,, but,, i've talked to a few people about that theory of having more compression with the carbon on top of the piston... NATURALLY, here are MY findings...( you KNEW IT didn't you???).. a TWO STROKE MOTOR rely's on Crankcase scavenging theory to remove the burned hydrocarbons and SPENT FUEL... The carbon, just like a NON PORTED and POLISHED motor, slows down the exhaust gasses that are trying to leave the motor... The porting and polishing both the intake tract and exhaust tract will help TREMENDOUSLY with the motors ability to "breathe".. My theory (and I MIGHT BE WRONG) is,, the more air/fuel you can SHOVE into a motor the better HORSEPOWER the motor will produce!!! providing it has a easy way OUT of the motor...Backpresssure in the exhaust ACTUALLY slows you down.. I understand we are talking trail sleds here and some backpressure is necessary to keep the cylinder temps from melting pistons,,,but,,,in theory,, EXHAUST PIPES SLOW YOU DOWN!!! If you look at FUEL MOTORS at the NHRA events.. the dragsters use the SMALLEST LENGTH of PIPES they can get away with!!! (also the BIGGEST BORES TOO) The compression that you gain does not do ANYTHING to the performance of the engine unless you have a way to figure out the ADDED OCTANE and the difference in the jetting to compensate... So,, in closing,, I do NOT BELIEVE the "old wise tale" that a dirty combustion chamber actually HELPS you any!!! Yes, the compression is higher,,,but the detrimental effect of airflow has ALSO been hindered... WHADDAYA THINK????? Gary Oles nosboy
hey 2000SRX. Why aren't you out on the trails?? Didn't you get a foot of snow by you??? We got about 4 inches around Midway airport here!!! isn't worth going to the forest preserves and payint the 40 or 50 bucks for the permits...

yeah, all of our sleds are still in pieces trying to get them together but there are also a good amount of customers sleds that need to be finished before ours.
Thats A Good Answer!!!
I wanted to go riding around the GROVE today. I see the trail signs in the parking lot when I bring the racecar out.. I've never rode those trails HAVE YOU????? if I would have known, i would have pulled the vipers out by you and we could have rode a while and shot the shIt about nitrous.. I liked talking to you a few weeks ago,,,but,, i was kinda in a hurry that day!!!! Maybe we could do bratwursts and cheese curds at the Brat stop one of these days??? gary Oles nosboy
a Friend (corvin Latus) grew up with Austin Coil in Stickney (argo) and he once told me that CLEANLINESS=HORSEPOWER!!! This guy probably taught Austin Coil a lot of what he knows!!! You can take that to the BANK!!!! gary Oles nosboy
Austin Coil sure did!!! (John Force too!!!)
Guess I did not explain that so well. My combo is one cleaner at a time. Starting with the seafoam. then carb cleaner, easy off, and then the aircraft paint stripper. I spray or wipe on. wait half a minute, and use a rag, the plastic scraper or a scotch brite pad depending on what I see on the valve for removal. Once I'm done, I coat the valve with a bit a Yamalube and put her back in.
We did get a fair amount of snow up here in NE IL./ SE WI. I did ride around the yard for a few miles to satisfy the craving... The trails are NOT open. I noticed in Zion today that the DNR had their sleds out for a little X-mas money. (citations)
I'm pretty sure that nothing opens up officially until the 15th.
