Temp-A-Flow and your adjustments

For those of you who have the TEMP,how did you set up for the best performance. Says in instructions to turn setting 1/8 th right of the white dot when you first start out. Check plug color and adjust accordinly.Mine is a nice tan color at the original position. If I turn the setting to the white dot position(that's really where it should be),do I risk something or just go and do it and check plugs again.I am jetted for a true -20 F. right now as instructions called for.What have you done to get it right.
 
I left mine right where it was, 1/4 turn rich from the dot and never had any issue at all. It was definatly one of the best purchases and bang for the buck that I ever spent on my SRX. Plugs nice and tan and power was very crisp even when the temps where in the 30's.

I vented down and behind the airbox, so I wanted a slight cusion given underhood temps that may have the Tempflow leaning the motor under slow speed stop and go stuff.
 
You mean you got yours ajusted 1/4 turn clockwise from the dot. Instructions say do not go more then 1/8 turn from the dot.It states that 1/8 th turn clockwise from the dot raises the turn on temp of the TEMPA FLOW from -20F to +5F and provides a conservative way to start.If it looks like it is running run,then states you can turn 1/8 th counter clockwise back to the dot which is factory setting.
 
-20 F=-29 C and +5 F = -15 C.I don't have to keep switching the position every time temps change do I.Right now outside is -28 C. Does that mean I have to rotate 1/8 counter clockwise to the dot now.And the windchill factor right now is -37 C. To cold for me to go out right now.

I really don't mean to beat a dead horse here but i would like to buy a tempa or a vari flow but i just don't know what to get.I think the tempa flow would be best for me but i would like too mount the hose under the handle bar pad ...is that a good idea ?. I did a search and it kept me reading for some time.And i still have no clue on what to buy,Can some one please help me out....reddog
 
You mean instead of having the hose go thru the airbox to the back with a tee,you would run the hose up and under the steering pad. That would prob. be good.Someone mentioned that to.Would then like to see a diagram on how you would incorporate everything.You mean the compensator would be under the pad?

Yeah well my biggest thing is to get away from the heat because i don't want my sled too burn because you need to ride a mile or so to let the tempaflow adjust to the temp out side and i'm getting a set of aaen pipes from changeup and i don't wanna be messing around with jet's and stuff i just wanna stop and go kinda thing,...reddog
 
there are a few tuners on here that dont like them at all. mostly because people dont heed the warning that holtzman gives you. NO HARD ACCELERATION AFTER SITTING FOR EVEN SHORT PERIODS OF TIME!

what we have done in the past is, everytime we stop, even after racing a short distance, or powder playing, stucks, breaks ect... is to lift the hood and let the sled sit with the hood open. but then still ride at least a few hundred yards varying throttle positions before hard accelerations.

without being super anal about the cleaning out of the warm under hood air, and letting the compensator re-adjust for conditions, sooner or later over time the pistons will be hurt alittle at a time.

i run one but, i hurt my viper last year playing with the tempaflow at altitude. i will not be running one this year. do they work, yes, can they hurt your motor, yes. if you think they cant you are only fooling yourself. and for the it cant happen to me people, i am probably one of the most safest anal retentive people out there, and i did it. so YES, it CAN happen to you.

tune your sled for 90% of the conditions you ride, and deal with the 10% that it doesnt. the small amout of extra hp really isnt all that in the great scheme of things. clutching and gearing are so much more important. if you heed this warning i was given by a great tuner, you and your sled will be alot happier.

this goes for all alt/temp compensators, variflow, atacc, tempaflow, variflo ect...

I had the one on my viper last year at the 1/8 turn rich(clockwise) and ran it that way all year. We rode in 34 degree F temps, and -20 degree F temps, never touched it. If you jet for -20, and install the bypass, you will be just fine. I would only run a vari flow if it was a multi range, and with an egt gauge. Yhat is what I switche d to this year with pipes. If you are jetted for -20 per the instructions, then check it using piston wash/plugs, Once it's dialed in you never have to touch it. I ran one for 2 years on my ZR900. I went on a trip in N Ont shortly after installing it and was somewhat paranoid about it. We rode 1700 miles in 7 days, and temps ranged from -34C for the first 2 days to +3 when we loaded up. I checked the plugs and wash every day of the trip, and it was perfect always, even under those varying conditions. I was very careful with my routing/venting, hose lengths are important as discussed in the instructions. I also never hammered it after a "hot" stop, but hey that;s probably not a good practice anyways, as pistons cool off fast. IMO they work, but it must be set up correctly first. BTW the 900 (03) got 15.6mpg over the course of that trip.
 
I have ran one for 3 seasons, without problems, however i am quite carefful after stops, and cool down periods. I run mine at the dot as i am using slightly larger pilots and needle position on Bender pipes. Turk gave me a good recomendation on set up a couple years back.Its a tad rich when its warm outside, so i then turn the tempaflow when i notice it being lazy. It has worked well for me.I run the inlet near the clutch vents, and fresh cool air is easily obtained.
