This is kind of an obscure question but there have to be some welders on here.
I just bought an auto-darkening welding helmet for my Dad for christmas. I was paging through the manual and it says, "This auto-darkening helmet is not suitable for laser welding & Oxyacetylene welding/cutting processes." He welds w/ an oxy-acetylene torch so I would like to know why this one won't work and where I can find one that will. I have tried to find the answer on my own online but haven't had much luck.
Helmet specs:
Solar power
3.85in. x 1.73in. view area
Light state shade DIN 4
Sensitivity adjustable variable shade from DIN 9–13
1/25,000 second switch time
Automatic Power on/off
Adjustable ratchet headgear
Full Face and front of neck protection
UV/IR up to DIN 16 at all times
Meets CE, ANSI z87.1 standard
Any help would be greatly appreciated

because usualy the light frim a tourch wont trigger the auto darkining. if you want an auto darkening helmet for Oxyacetylene i know that esab makes one with a cutting/grinding function that is sutable for use with a tourch. there are probably others but thats the only one that i am familar with

Its actually the frequency of the arc is what triggers the lens to darken. I tried grinding with my helmet on instead of using a face shield and the sparks set of the lens immidiately. T
I use one every day at work. Leave the hood in the off position and wear a pair of GOOD safety glasses. My Uvex glasses absorb UV and act as an extra
layer of protection. Also use this method when plasma cutting. Haven't had any problems with my eyes feeling burned or spotting.

Then why does my Jackson NexGen helmet darken when you look at the sun or even a regular flourasent light when the senstivity is set high?????? And why are grinding sparks setting your helmet off when you said yourself that it darkens when the frequency of the arc triggers it?
This helmet was $300 but was well worth it, with all the adjustments you can make on it. And it does everything you need it to do. The grind and cut mode lets your choose your liking of darkness, but there is no triggering of any lenses. Its just one shade, set to your liking. For welding you have more than enough options to make it work for you and the type of welding you may be doing. Thats why I like it so much.

Well, I guess that having my speedglas helmet on extra sensitive has something to do with it. I have pointed the helmet towards the sun to see if it would darken and it took quite a while for it to "turn on". Hey it protects my eyes....
