ok of topic but it's my yami hauler so it kinda fits.. I have a chevy blazer right now I love it but it's typical blazer junk. I have been looking for a fullsize truck for along time and came across a 2006 dodge ram reg cab slt fully loaded with 2,500mi for 17k. Turns out it's 17k cause it is a 2wd. Book on it is 24k. I love the truck and the dealer sweetend the deal pretty good but I'm scared to death over the 2wd in snow thing. Any opinions???? btw it's riding on 20's, and has a 2k hard cover on the bed.

We have been riding in the UP for 18 years, about a 4 hour drive from home in some nasty conditions and my best friend has always owned 2- wheel drive trucks and they have always worked great. We used to always have a third sled in the back so the extra weight helped with traction. The bottom line is you will not have any issues with 4 wheel drive system to worry about$$ and if you love the truck go for it!
I will say that I have a Tahoe and it is the best tow vehicle I have ever had, lately I have seen 01-02's that are priced around $12,000-$14,000; You may want to consider that?

We towed with a 2000 Dodge Dakota 3.9v6 2wd truck for 6yrs. The one time we were going up north it started to snow pretty good. There was a few times I was contemplating turning around thinking I would never make it up the final hill before our destination. There was three 4x4 trucks behind me hauling their sleds so I pulled over to let them by before the hill and it was a good move. They went up the hill and basically broke trail because there was about 4-61nches of fresh snow on the road. I put it in 2nd and let her go trying to stay in the tracks and just before the top I was spinning like crazy but needless to say we made it. The guys with the 4x4"s were impressed and also said they would"ve towed me had"nt made it. We go to a snowbelt area every weekend and that was the first time a 4x4 would have come in handy. If it"s a good deal go for it.

I think I just might go for it. I knew someone on here had to have experience with 2wd trucks! Cobalt I would look at the tahoes but I've kinda had it with chevy. I loved thier trucks for years and owned 6 of them and they always let me down with numerous problems. Unfortunately for me though they are the trucks I am most comfortable with. I'll keep you all posted!

Dodge trucks are awesome and I am not saying that just because I work for Chrysler. They have a great ride and are dependable and look good. That are not the dodge of 20-25 years ago. Go for it. All manufactures have nice trucks now and you really couldn't go wrong with any of them. The two wheel drive will provide a better ride versus a 4 wheel drive. Personally I like having the 4 wheel drive option. A friend of mine used to praise his dodge and talked constantly about what a bad *** truck it was. He was always a strictly ford guy until he bought the dodge. Now he works for Fords and sold the dodge and regrets it every day.

Blazer junk.......come on now, i've always had good luck with my GM trucks
that's all i'll own,my old '89 5.7 3/4 ton and 4.11's with 211,000 miles won't die,,,and will pull anything if you can hook onto it....
i would definitely stay with a 4x4 i wouldn't think of using a 4x2 that's crazy
to much of a chance the a$$ end will chick out on ya,,had it happen,,scary...
you'll regret it later when your stuck somewhere.

I'm with Daman... what's up with your blazer? I've had two s-series blazers in the past 4 years and i'm considering getting another (and keeping my current one).
And i wouldn't touch a 2wd truck with a 40 ft pole. I don't care how cheap it is, losing control and ditching it AND my sleds would pi$$ me right off.
GM 4x4, Best built truck on the market. I work on GM, FORD, and DODGE every day. The only truck I would drive is a GM. Ever try and change plugs on a 5.4 Ford 4x4. You will never buy a Ford after that. Ever get stuck in the snow with a newer dodge 4x4, That front crossmember acts like a plow it's so low, jams up with snow, jams the steering rack and blows the rack. Don't get me wrong Gm has faults too, but not as many as Ford and Dodge. As for 2wd or 4x4, I will never own another 2wd again.

Yes and I still own it. Good thing it's paid for. Ford also had a rash of the 5.4's that liked to spit spark plugs on thier own.
I keep my 4wd truck for having a truck. I picked up a small car for work and the summer. I even put snow tires on it so I get the best of having a truck when I need it and 4wd when I need it.
The problem with the 5.4's is the electrode part of the plug breaks off and stay's siezed in the hole when you try and change the plug. There is a buletin from ford on this, and a special tool that you have to have at a cost of about 350.00. If you are not able to get them out with the tool the head has to be removed. In order to remove the head the engine has to come out. I would not want to be the owner of that truck if this happened. A simple tune up turned into a 25 hour job plus parts. Not to mention the 4 hours spent with the ford tool trying to get them out. If I get a 5.4 in my shop for a tune up I tell the costomer to take it to the dealer.

i would recomend you get a 4x4. its worth the extra money and security...ive seen trucks that only have 2 wheel drive and the *** goes out everywhere even with weight in the back, but if you really have no choise go with the 4x2 and put some damnn good winter tires with studs in em and make sure you have lots of weight in the rear end

hey justaviper,, don't have to remove the engine on those ford trucks... It's much easier to pull the cab off the frame to get the heads off em.. thats how we do em. Let the mounts go and any electical connections and use a hoist to lift the cab right off, then roll the truck out from under it. As for the dodge, another unmentioned thing if you plan on keeping it long,, those 20 inch wheels make for some reeeealy expensive tires when the ones on it wear out,, and snow tires, if ya wanted snow tires, still aren't available for em yet, at least not through any of our suppliers at the shop. Although you may be able to get some steel wheels and go down a rim size or 2 for winter, but not sure on that. Jeff

That's what I was told when I fixed mine, but didn't have a hoist. Had to do it all the hard way. Still running though. I enjoyed it so much I did it 3 times. Fixed it (1) , thought I'd tweak it (2), broke it and fixed it again (3)
the chev i own is a 4x4 currently but i had 2 2wd ones before this one. with good tires and the weight of a truck cap they will pretty much go where you need them to. put a locker in the rear and it will go the same places as most stock 4x4 trucks with a little weight in the rear.
i was out at the hunt camp with the shop 2x4 cause my truck was in the paint shop, anyways it snowed 6" the night before. i put 400lb of patio stone in the rear at the tailgate before i left home. got to the road and it was unplowed as its a old logging road. i made all the hills except the last one as i couldnt see over the mound of snow on the hood so i had to slow down to make shure i didnt fall off the road. got it unstuck and made it up the hill under its own power with a little momentum. came back out the next day +4 wheeler in the box and i made it all the way out without a tow at all and it is worse to come out than go in.
skill helps but you can learn it.
