Well I got to get the phazer that I bought a little while ago out, and it ran pretty good but I am concerned about the jetting. It seems to me that it is running lean... Here are the plugs let me know what you think, two are the same plug.. By the way this machine has a DG performance pipe

Seems lean to me obiously you can change this with jetting, I cannot read the jets in it my best guess is they are stock 143.5 But cant tell for sure but I put some 140's in and it ran better and the plug color was better. So I am thinking to put 145's to be safe. the Sled will be run at 2000 ft - 4500 ft at probably 10-30 F

One other thing that has me kind of worried is that on the carb boots on the airbox side there are holes punched in the boot. on both sides they are purposely put there but I don't know why or if they are from the factory maybe that is part of my lean condition.

Anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I want it ready for a trip next thursday....

How much driving on new plugs does it take to get an accurate reading? I put maybe 5 miles is that enough?

Cardboard brown is how they should be.
Hopefully someone with some more experience will comment as well.

You are way too lean!
1st thing with any phazer running a aftermarket pipe is make sure you do the carb update that is listed in the tech section and jet up to a 100 pilot jet. A 143.5 main should be fine for that elevation. The problem with phazers is there is bad lean spot right of idle and is made worse when running a pipe. You definately need to replace those airbox boots right away, that problem alone could burn the motor down!

So there is not supposed to be holes in the bottom of the intake boots? They look like they were put there on purpose but that doesnt mean that someone didnt know what they were doing..

Anyone know how long it will take to get an accurate plug reading?

No the holes are not supposed to be there! To get a accurate plug reading for the main jet circut you need to run the sled wide open for 1/4 mile then shut down the motor and coast to a stop and check plugs. To check pilot circut run same 1/4 mile at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle and shut down motor and check plugs.

I wonder if the previous owner didn't put the holes in so he could fogg the engine in the spring. Plug them and then you could do the same.

The plugs look pretty new.

You should have your boost bottle in those holes. Are the boots upside down?

The holes he is talking about are in the carb to air box boots. The boost bottle is connected between the carbs and reed cages!
