Buying Yamaha parts online vs local dealer.?

Daman: You have just identified the Wal-Mart/Sam's Club philosophy-if you cut margin and decide to sell on volume then you must strip out overhead-so you end up shopping in a warehouse with nothing in the way of qualified personnel to answer questions or other available amenities, such as dealers willing to place custom orders for non-stock parts.

It's simple economics. There's always a point at which you can maximize your sales. Price too high, and you won't make enough sales, price too low, and you'll make plenty of sales, but not enough on each sale to cover your expenses.

Good businesses track and chart profit per item vs. volume. It's the only way to find the point at which X(number of parts sold per month) times $Y(profit per part after expenses) is maximized.

been buying from south seattle sports plaza for the past year or so.
made 3 online purchases, takes a day or so longer than lets say dennis kirk to get parts mostly because of proximity, I suspect.
never a problem and they respond quickly to your e-mail inquiries.
they were 17% off list last year and recently went to 25% off.
other dealerships are coming around to selling @ discount online also.
shipping ussally = state tax where Ilive AND the parts come right to my door for additional savings.
The only downside is not being able to interact with some arrogant counter jocky that thinks he's doing YOU a favor by waiting on you, and then having to ASK for a little bit of a discount like some begger.....not ALL deralerships treat you that way, but we have 2 that I am forced to go to from tiome to time in this area.

Well I just placed an online order with Highlands Yamaha (my local dealer) we will see how long it takes to get the parts-16% online discount and the parts were all listed with the fiche.

I dropped a few hundred so I think the online ordering was worth it.

I buy my Yammie parts from my local dealer - they aren't the cheapest, and they don't stock any commom items (only been a Yamaha dealer for two years) but if you buy enough parts they'll give you a price break, and they usually get them pretty quick, too.

Ive known terry and his brother John for a LOT of years!!! Always fair guys and John I consider a friend... They split up a few years back and John went his own way.. Terry goes out of his way to get the parts to you FAST and he has a BIG stock of parts IN STOCK!!!! Usually takes 1 or 2 days to get from Yamaha in Kenosha wisconsin, then he ships right away, EVERYDAY.. 1-708-246-4003 www.highlandsyamaha.com Gary Oles nosboy

I order on line quite a bit from Highlands Yamaha. They have been great! I live in Arlington Heights, IL which his about 50 miles from them in Countryside. I place an order on Monday, 99% of the time it is on my doorstep the next afternoon UPS ground. I also call them to add items and they are always very nice about it. They also have a huge selection of Yamaha clothing and accessories at lower prices than Dennis Kirk and others.

Highlands rocks. Been using them a long time. Very efficient and helpful I just placed a pretty large order there late on a friday and I was able to pick it up on Tuesday. I work in Lombard so I just go there to get my stuff because I usually add stuff you cant get on the site. Dan is pretty helpful there too. He's a pretty good wrench.
By the way...if your replacing bearings...DON'T order bearings off the site. The Yami bearings are like 7 bucks (6004's) They stock bearings that are like 2-3 bucks. No part number on the web but if you call it in and tell Dan or whoever that you want their bearings... they will throw them in your shipment. I go thru bearings like water if I do a 3-4K mile season so I just buy 12 at a time.

My bad. The Parts unlimited bearings are 7 bucks and the Yami's are 13ish. I must have been thinking of something else. I called today because I needed some 6205's. I have been wrencing on both sleds so I have a ton of parts in my head right now. I don't know what I was thinking.
Either way...you save about 5-6 bucks a bearing. I have had about the same results no matter what bearing I have used. Water gets in them...period!

As far as all the other parts...they are OEM so there the quality is there.

If you need bearings,, there is a place called MOTION INDuSTRES here in Chicago.. They used to be called BERRY BEARING..!!!! A bearing with a number stamped on the side could be bought through berry bearing for probably HALF the price of the dealer!!! Do a web search and call and find out!!!!

Motion industries (berry bearing) is ACROSS THE STREET from where they make YAMALUBE here in Chicago!!! (citgo) HOW IRONIC!!!!! Gary Oles nosboy

I did not know that Berry Bearing is no longer Berry Bearing...
I'll have to look into that since I am kinda anal about bearings. I replace most of them at least once a season. Seems like if I get a decent season in (3-4K) there shot along with the bogies themselves.

As far as internet vs. the local dealer it really depends on how many dollars worth of parts you're ordering.

Local dealer: you pay TAX, which in most cases is similar to shipping costs (more or less depending on how much you buy or have shipped).
Driving over there is still a PITA, gas, time etc.

I'd rather just order online from out of state, pay a little in shipping, save some on tax. Have parts delivered to my door and I'm done.

Some places will offer free or discounted shipping depending on how much you buy.

Just checked South Seattle Sports Plaza (www.yamahasportsplaza.com) and every part I need is on average $2 to $3 cheaper (per part) than Port Yamaha. That equates to free shipping and no tax, since I need quite a few parts. Port and Highlands have the same pricing, depends on how quickly you need the part. Right now I have some time so I don't mind waiting an extra day or two for shipping. If I was in a pinch I'd go through some place closer that uses a midwest distributor.

I have run into a few problems with a local supplier and the part numbers stamped into bearings.... Most of the time they can order what ever I need... but with my pre-'74 yami 292 crank bearings, they have told me they couldn’t sell. Something to do with the part number being a Yamaha part and the vendor could not sell direct :o| yamaha no longer stocks thoes and when I do find them, I end up paying thru the nose! #$%&*

I will second that :2strokes:

New owners at the Yamaha shop in Whitehorse.
I went in last Monday for a clutch roller.
They said sorry no stock. I said WTF its a wear part and you need to stock them and Iam ridding on Friday.
The guy jumps on the phone for 2 mins, hangs up and says.
No problem they will be on the plane from Toronto today.
Stop in Thursday and pick them up.
Service, service,service.
