should the weights be shiny and smooth or slightly rough to make rollers roll? Is it OK to polish the weights on the bearing surface before reassembly?

well they should be clean,which probably means shiny to.

Yes use dish detergent when you are cleaning them, that will help get all the belt dust and grime and oily substances off of them. And yes it is fine to polish the weight surface that is against the rollers.
Dishwashers work GREAT on just about everything! We redid the kitchen this year and the old dishwasher was top of the line for it's time (late 80's early 90's maybe?)so I hung onto it and I'm going to install it with the rest of the old kitchen out in the shop. I have 3000 sq ft outbuilding for a shop and it had the houses original 70's cabinets etc. in it so it will get the upgrade to the new old kitchen. Keeping the old washer and dryer for out there too for the shop rags.
If your wife will let you use the dishwasher...go for it!

I tried it and it didn't really work for me. I think it just baked the dust on even harder lol. I'll give it a couple more shots and see if I have to use a whole box of detergent to get them clean... they're pretty black inside.

If you have a real ganky one, you can pre soak it in simple green concentrate, then use in the dishwasher. the simple green will pre dissolve alot of it and not hurt the clutch or the dishwasher, you can also add some simple green to the water spot remover in dishwasher.
I used the dishwasher crystal detergent, just fill up the soap box and put it on hot cycle.

just for anyone who wants to know i did my cylinders and clutches. the cylinders came out great (not that dirty) the clutches should have been run through a couple of times. deffinatley will do again, when the wife is working..........
Use the dry crystal detergent, Not the liquid Gel stuff...Works great.
Oh yeah, Its not recomended to have other dishes in the dish washer at the same time

I just cleaned mine at work. I took the primary and secondary totally apart.......all but the spider. They were filthy with brownish red dust everywhere. I put them in the parts washer in our machine shop and lighty scrubbed everything with a soft brush. Then used compressed air to dry with some clean cloths. I'll let them sit for a few days to make sure all is dry. My machinist buddy checked all the bushings,rollers ,pins, pin bushings and tower guides for wear. I cleaned up all the little washers, helix buttons, etc. with emery cloth to rid any burrs. Polished and buffed helix ramp angles for a smooth sliding surface. Lightly emery clothed clutch faces for better belt grip and put a very slight amount of a special pure synthetic machine lube on pin guides etc.......stuff doesn't break down. Not really recommended by Yamaha, but the stuff we get is for special purpose machinery (expensive) and really makes the clutches more responsive as long as you don't over do it.

FYI, check to see if toilet bowl cleaner will react with metal. It's made to clean porcelean, not metal. My wife used it to clean mineral deposites off our shower. When it flowed down to the stainless steel drain cover, it made a nasty cloudy fog in the bathroom...just about put her to the floor. It was bad. Said somewhere on the bottle no metal contact.

Just a thought, rent a condo, take the wife/girlfriend for a romantic weekend and wash your "clutch " when no one is looking.

I fill a 4gal bucket with hot water and simple green remove clutch pull off the cover and spring soak it for a while then use a green scotch brite pad on the sheaves and a round parts brush and some smaller brushes to reach the rest same for the secondary pull it apart and dunk and soak it works real good and no residue to worry about blow it dry and yer done.
