Trying to dial in an 03 viper it's bone stock, 144 studs up the middle on stock finger track, has a bender kit in it right now with a 2002b helix and silver (i dunno if it's yamaha or bender) secondary spring. was gonna install heel clickers in it. just a few questions though: can you use the stock 14.5 mm rollers or do you have to go bigger? will that helix work with heel clickers? anyone have a rough idea of the angles in it? should we switch to a yamaha green secondary? and where should we start for weight and position of the weight? any info would be great thanks guys.

here is a viper set up that will get ya close, for use with single pipe, red primary spring only, stock 14.5 rollers.

heel-4.0
middle-3.3
tip-4.3

helix - 48/34 to use with a red secondary at 90 degrees twist

I dont know what angles your helix is or the spring stuff, I know the stuff above works!

Don't mean to hijack the thread but do you have a set up for a 02 srx that works?

i am using hc on nonpiped viper, i did go with 15mm rollers, i am also using lp roller secondary. I have always run the grey spring but am going to try red spring per mrvipers recommendations.

It's been years since I ran non-piped but that sounds right when I ran it, I may have had the 15mm rollers though & it worked great all around. For racing on the snow I had to grab 3/4 throttle to get it to hook & then hammer it but it ran real well for what it was.

with my setup,15mm rollers i am running 4.3 3.3 7.3 with a 46/36 again this is with the grey spring but the roller with the poo s/b spring has alot of side force so that may be the difference. mrviper knows his stuff so listen to him on what to do.

Listen to mr viper. I asked him about my supertip setup, and he told me what he'd do. Lets just say, PULLING LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN. It pulls right to 9050, and holds it there, and man is it fast with the hyfax melting tight. Bring on the snow. Thanks Don Maxdlx

I have an 02 viper with HC's I used the red spring and 4g in tip 3g in heel with a 48/40 Avantedge helix.

Update on 03 Viper w/ HC

Though I would update our results for others using HC on a non-piped Viper.

Top RPMs were a little low with the initial setup (above). Engaged at 3800, then climbed to 7900 and stayed there all the way through.

After some tinkering, we ended up with the following setup...
Primary: red spring, heel 4.3, middle empty, tip 3.4, using stock 14.5 rollers
Secondary: 48/34 helix, red spring at 80 twist.
Engages at 3900, then climbs to 8550, but drops about 100 RPM on a long pull (+3000').

Not a bad setup. Did 107 mph in 4000' on GPS (118 on speedo)! Wish I could get that 100 RPM back, any recommendations?

MrViper, thanks a bunch for the initial setup! Managed to get the recommended 48/34 helix from another TY member (thanks stealth800).

Thanks also to SNOWRULES for his time, his experience, his tools and of course his heated drive-in basement.

PS - Testing performed on 1/2"-1" snow covered lake at -15*C. The machine as described above is also equipped with reverse.

100rpm down on top?-ya, put the red secondary at 90 like the set up is listed at instead of 80 like you have it. You can always run a green secondary at 60-70. using the red is a loose secondary, if you get up past 90 twist to achieve desired results I tell you to go to the green secondary and start low.

Something that no one seems to understand is not all snowmobiles are the same, some make more power then others, rider weight, track used, studs used, this all changes the clutching rpm to some point, so if you get a set up, you need to fine tune it to YOU and YOUR sled, to get it bang on!

Yah, I get that all things are not created equal. I think without your advice on a starting point we could have been weeks getting this thing dialled in, not to mention the frustration factor. Instead all it took was a couple hours on the lake and I'm within 100 RPM! Pretty dam good if you ask me. This site is amazing.

Anyway, I’ll crank that red up to 90 where it’s supposed to be. If that’s not enough, I think SNOW has a spare green he’ll let me borrow. Thanks again MrViper!;)!

UPDATE: Since I'm suddenly getting a lot of questions about my setup. We ended up swapping out the red secondary spring and for a green at 60*. This corrected the 100 RPM drop problem I was having on the top end.

I personally ride trails 90% of the time and love this setup. For lake racing I'd actually soften the secondary spring tension to 50*.
