Changing Oil Pump 94 VMAX 600. What else should I do?

I am changing the oil pump on my 94 VMAX 600 ST. I also am chaging the oil injection filter. While I am doing this I am draining oil tank completely and running Amsoil Interceptor even though my sled doesn't require it. I am a dealer and buy it by the case because I run it in my jet skis. Is there a good way to clean out oil tank without contaminating it. Any tips on bleeding oil lines also. I have never done this before and do not want to mess anything up.
 
you dont need to clean out the inside of the tank to make the switch. Amsoil is completely compatible with all of the other 2 stroke oils. Just pour it in, bleed the lines, and go to town.

on a '94 vm,,link's in my sig.
 
I know I do not have to clean it out but thought I would anyway. Just in case there is some crud in the bottom of tank from 12 years of dedicated service.

wouldn't hurt a thing go for it..
 
Mike, Are you thinking that your original oil pump is bad and just pumping at max? Did you buy a spankin new one? Let me know how it turns out. I was thinking that mine was bad but all 3 of our V-maxs are using about the same amount of oil.

From what I have heard there was a known problem with them from the beginning. The guy I bought it from said it went through alot of plugs. I used almost a gallon going 215 miles. I bought a new pump on Ebay for 70.95 shipped. There is another oil pump listed on Ebay now. I called peacock to verify it would fit. It was alot cheaper than 167. they wanted. Did your friend Todd decide to upgrade his secondary? There is one of those on Ebay know too. I am gonna try to get up there between Christmas and New Years to test everything out. I found out the hard way that my shocks were bad on the skid I installed. I put new shocks on it and did secondary swap and still haven't tested everything due to no snow. May have to hit the field next to my friends house after a heavy rain to test everything. Clutch engagement is right at 4200 or so and seems to back shift nice but that is without a load on it. We will see.
 
He found a 94 secondary. His sled is running better than it ever has! I was up there for 10 days and 2 feet of snow the week before last! That was the most snow I've seen up there for years! Not sure if you know this but Johndee.com has a trailcam in Irons. Just go to N.C.N on the left side and it will pull up a map of Michigan. Just hit the snowflake near Irons and it will show this guys backyard with a ruler in the ground.

I have seen it. I go on www.johndee.com all the time. I had commitments and couldn't make it up there it was killing me not being up there. My parents live and there and I know one of the groomers so I get pretty good trails reports.
 
My oil pump finally came in. I found a tip for the next guy. If there is fuel in your tank when you disconnect the fuel line from oil pump fuel will continue to drip out if line is not plugged. After working a while the smell of gas got very strong then I noticed a big puddle under the sled. Do not remove old oil pump from fuel line until you are ready to re-install new one. Will post as I learn more.
 
Pump has been installed and new lines installed also. There was some air in the lines but a few slow pulls pulled bubble right out. Anything else I should do. I set the throttle free play then adjusted oil pump. I do not want to miss anything. I am aiming at a trouble free UP trip year. First year I broke a piston ring. Year 2 did a skid swap and found out I had bad shocks while Iwas out on the trail. Also had secondary problem. This year 96 style secondary and carbs and new boyeson reeds was installed along with new spring in the primary. Engagement is around 4200 give or take 100 or 200 hundred on a stand. Idle is at 1550.
 
Just give it a good visual lookover, sounds like you got the pump working
right and adj., does it seen to smoke a little less??

be nice if you could rip around the house to make sure every thing is
on the up and up before you take off.

that engagement seems a little high tho??? stock is around 32-3,600
 
I need to double check the engagement speed. I put a little heavier spring in the primary and secondary. I filled with oil tonite and marked the tank. I will let sit all night to check for leaks. Tommorrow I will re-install the carbs and fire it up if no leaks are present. Looks like I will be doing a little playing in the grass to test everything out. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am thinking snow.
 
Well I fired it up today and it seems like a completely different sled. It sounds better. It is running smoother. Throttle response is awesome. It seems to rev much quicker. Clutch engagement was around 3400-3500 rpm. It tacked out around 8100 or so. It is still smoking a little but temps are around 45 and I probably need to run it hard to clean pipe out. Should be good to go. C'mon snow.
