Hey everyone! I was wondering what your opinion was of the 600 twin in the early mountain max's?('97 up) I'm getting back into riding after a few years, and my previous sled was an ET250.( I was 14 lol) Anyway, I plan on riding around locally(I'm in central Alberta), as well as riding around the west country of alberta, and maybe a little in BC at a later date. Would the 600 be good enough, or should I wait for a 700? I want something that will be reliable, and not have to wrench on all the time except for maintenance. Also what should a person watch out for when buying one of these?

Get the 700 tripple. I have owned almost every year of the MM and wait for the 700.
97 MM700 had crank berring problems. I blew mine 2 times before fixing the problem. I sold that sled to a friend who beats the crap out of. He had green algei growing in his carbs, cleaned em out and she fired right up and it still is one of the fastest MM I have ever ridden. Not to mention he stores it outside in the rain all year round and never touches it. Says something about Yamaha's
My 98 MM600 was great then I sold it to another friend and it has not run since. It grenades every ride... I must be jinxed
My 2001 MM700 was smooth and sweet. Made me wish I had never bought a 600 twin, night and day difference.

Be careful of those 600's with the "Smart Carb" system. Then can be real lemons. Some fun flawlessly.
I have been very happy with the 700 triples. They never left me stranded. They also seem to get better mileage than any Polaris of that CC. I average 1500 - 2K miles a year. I used to run Polaris & Cats.
 
I think the 98 and later 600 was better although I had a 97 and it never gave me a problem. I sold the 97 for a 2000MM, the only simularities was in the name. If you can hold out, get a 2000 or later. There are a number for sale on Snowest and probably this site. Prices aren't really too bad.
 
Come on guy's,,my twin 600's have been great over the many years and
thousands of miles,i've yet to blow a 600 twin.

may not be the choice mill for mountain riding, but for every thing
else i've thrown at them they perform flawlessly.
 
Over 4,000 miles on my dad's 96 600, has always run very dependably. And tough as hell. Ought to be great in the newer chassis.
 
97 crank issues

Most people had no crank issues with a 97 700.I had 3 with no problems.I think if you had problems it was a fluke as they were bullet proof engines.All they did in 98 was add a few more bolts in the cases a put a single bearing on the mag side as to two smaller bearings.My engines see more full throttle than anything and as I said there were no crank problems.Yes the 98's are stronger but not really needed.
 
if your looking for a reliable machine get the 700 triple. mine has 10,000 km on it and i ride full throtle 80-90% of the time. im not planning on tuching the motor atleast until 25,000-30,000 km......my brother had a mm 600 twin and it has been nothing but trouble since he had it
 
Mm600

This my 2 cents worth. My wife had a 98 MM600 with SMart Carbs and for 2 years it worked great. Then we were out west and the thing locked up solid. The oil pump shaft that is driven by the water pump broke. After looking at it we figured it was never greased or had very little grease from the factory. Believe it or not Yamaha picked up the parts and I paid for the labor. Crank, pistons and cyl. We then ran it until 2002 and put over 5400 miles on it with no problems. In 2000 I bought a MM700 for myself after coming of off a 96 MM600. What a sled, 3 mpg better than any twin we ever had. In 2002 I bought my wife a 01 MM600 triple. We have average about 5000 miles plus on different 600 without a hitch until 2004 and 2005 my daughter and husband had bought my wife's 98 MM600 and started to have Smart Carb problems. The sensors started to go. There are 4 of them at $100.00 plus each. I bought a set of none Smart Carbs and installed them 2 weeks ago. I put 45 ohm resistors in place of the sensors to keep the light from flashing. End result BUY A TRIPLE 2000 OR LATER!!!! Better suspension. Sold my MM700 for a new Rage should never have done it. Wished I had it back.
