I think tomseal hit it on the head.
Maybe the confusion with some people is the gears are different thicknesses for different yrs?
98-99 are 15 wide gears and 00-01-02 are13 wide gears?
I bet if I put on 13 wide gears it would be close to flush with the end of the shaft.
Just a thought,
mul.

Yup..I am not worried anymore...even my original pics before disassembly show the sameejcamaro said:The 98 I'm working on is the same way Chili, I installed the gears this last weekend and wondered the same thing, shouldn't that gear fit on farther???? I measured where the drive sprockets and track were sitting and found that if the shaft did come over that last half inch the track would be way closer to the tunnel on that side, so I torqued it up and left it.
I have the new chaincase gasket in my hand, and i'll loktite the bolt...After that, its just dynoport and pipes (hoipefully no torn up knuckles with the springs), then the skid goes in.
good thing there's .12 inches of snow... lol

get some 13 wide gears and chain. they are lighter and less rotationg mass, especially the ones with the holes drilled on the bottom gear. I have hyvos in 13 wide and standard 13 wide in the shed.
My gears are always flush with the shaft plus i think the 98-99 srx were geared way too tall from the factory 23/37

Try this: Loosen the allen head screws on the speedometer side and then tighten the bottom gear. The axle may be too far to the left. One way to check this is to run a straight edge from the top gear to the bottom gear and see if all is well with that. The straight edge should touch both gears without any spacing between the straight edge and the gear.

might want to check your chain case seals too. If I saw oil that looks like chocolate milk in my chain case I would automatically expect it to be WATER!!

the seals actually are newer...it was the gasket, who ever had it off last didn't seat it right when they put the cover back on...i noticed it right away when I first pulled off the cover...I tightened the locking bearing(speedo side) after everything else was bolted (tip from dealer)
I am not worried, it is perfect, and I just got everything back together...pics tomorrow

I have a 2001 SX 700R chaincase that looks like that inside, sign of water. Gotta throw new seals in it. Water is not a good thing to have in a chaincase.
