Just wanted to see if anyone has any tips on puting the rear skid back in a 1997 XTC? Should I start with the front bolts and work my way back or start in the back and work my way to the front?

I always put the front bolts in first then the back bolts or whatever ones you can get lined up................. then I usually have to grab one of the kids or someone to help with the last bolt as I line things up have them start the bolt.

I have had my skid out MANY times (LOTS of blown shocks LOL). Put the front bolts in first, center second. Then loosen the bolt on the end of your transfer rods. 14 mm wrench and about 1 minute each. Loosening this bolt relaxes your rear shock enough to line up the rear bolts. I have done this laying in the snow using a flashlight and my cover for a drop cloth LOL.

Flip your sled on its side to install front bolts. Then your tunnel holds the skid, saves your back and you are off the ground. Then flip to the other side and install the middle bolts. Sled upright and install the last. Sometimes it goes better if I lay across the seat and use my weight to put pressure on the suspension for the final bolts.
The only bolts I loosen are the two track tensioners. Also have several things to pry and a putty knife works great. This is for my srx, hope it helps with your xtc.

Front bolts, back bolts then middle, didn"t have to loosen anything to get it in.
I did by raising the back up high, lay two pieces of 1" pvc pipe across the track lugs and the skids slides in no problem, simpleless skid I have ever installed. Good luck

Have someone push forward on the rear axle when aligning the rear bolts. Takes all of the work out of it. They don't even have to set their beverage down, as exhibited at one of the Muni rides quite well.
I personally use a hoist in the back, and a floor jack in front at my shop. After you have done it several times it is incredibly easy, even by yourself.
However, when outside one's own shop you have to make use of what is there. Also you will likely be getting ribbed (I actually enjoy this part) by whoever is around. At the Muni rides that usually means quite a number including many who have done the job a number of times. I like to stir the pot by pretending that I don't know what I am doing. With a memory like mine, this is actually quite easy to do sometimes.

Got it in last night and it was very easy. Thanks for all the tips and sugestions.

loosen drive shaft bearing set screws
back off the transfer rod lower bolts 3/8in
back off rear idler adjustment all the way, move axle ahead and tighten axle bolts.
put fra adjuster in the soft/upper setting.
lift sled so that the front shaft will just fit under the fram next to the drive shaft
then slide the front into the track so it is headed tward center
now reach through the track and pull the skid tward you while lifting it up and down
lower rear of sled while holding back on skid to pull it behind the drive shaft
now install the front bolts, dont tighten
now go to the rear bolts, lower the sled onto them(two putty knives help to guide it past the inner braces)
install these bolts, dont tighten
now lift the back of the sled, the weight of the suspenion will lift the center/fra shaft into place, you may need to wiggle it a bit to get it up past the rivots(this is the reason for not tightening any bolts and loosening the bearing locks)
now tighten all suspension bolts
lock tight and tighten the bearing set screws
tightening the supsenion first will make sure that the bearing has no side load on it.

I agree with this, put a pipe wrench on the center bolt shaft and turn it and it will "spin" right into position.
