I live in IL and am heading to WI to pick up a new sled on Saturday. I may continue on after an already 6 hr journey 4 more hours to get to Minocqua or where ever there is snow.
My question is this: if I live in IL and buy a sled in WI and don't go back to IL for a few days, how do I register it in IL so I can get a WI trail permit?
thanks
joel

I believe you can register it with WI. registration at the dealer you buy it from using your ILL. address. You will have to pay Wisconsin sales tax on it though. This will save you from putting ILL. registration on it and then having to buy the out of state permit also.
I would go to a Currency Exchange or maybe online now and get a registration form for Illinois and bring it with you. When you buy the sled, fill the form out with all the VIN numbers and mail it in, keeping a copy for yourself, maybe even a copy of your check. Carry them with you(like a license applied for permit). It takes Illinois weeks to get your registration going! The dealer might even have the Illinois registration stuff for you. You need to register your sled to your home address, I would think. Then buy the Wisconsin permit anywhere. I don't even think they check your Illinois registration, to tell you the truth. They are more than happy to sell you the Wisc. permit!
I just spoke with the dealer, and he said I have to have a physical address in WI to register it there. That doesn't seem to make sense, as I could have registered my sled in CO when I went there... Boats can be registered in states they don't have an address in... Hmm.. Perhaps a call to DNR would be in order...

Whoo Hoo!!! I just got off the phone with a lady at the WI DNR southern region 608-743-4800 Janesville office, and told her my situation. She said I could pay the taxex in WI, and register my sled in WI. I do not have to have a mailing address in WI and the sled does not have to be stored in WI. I can live in IL and store the sled in IL.
It's starting out as a great day,

thanks for everyone's help... now we just need snow

Go to the Illinois DNR website; download the form for sled registration. Submit it and keep a copy whihc is good for 120 days.
Wait for IL DNR to send registration stickers.

Woody when you go to register it in Il you'll have to pay the difference in tax only between IL and WI... I personally would fill out the IL as your primary Registration first then make WI your secondary... Dual Registrations are common now plus you don't have to go get the annoy'n WI trail stickers every year...
Screw it register it in WS. you can ride in Ill as long as your sled is registered in anyother state for free. So why register it in Ill and then pay to register it in ws. Thats the nice thing about Ia and Ill, bad part is there is never anysnow to ride on. Maxdlx

All, I bought my sleds in Wis but lived in IL, You pay the sales tax partly in wis than pay diff of the sales tax in il. I registered my sleds in il and had to buy trail permit for wis. I lived on the border and if you rode into wis without permit they would ticket you. I would go and get a registration form from your local town office, fill it out, keep copy of check, and form as temp until stickers come. I did that quite a few times and did not have any issues when stopped, Thanks Bluebullet
