Hey everyone.

I am about to replace my cracked engine case (9K miles on sled) and would like to make sure I replace the appropriate crank bearings. I know I have heard the PTO side should be replaced with a 1998 or later bearing from the SX / SXR.

When looking at the Microfiche from ronnies.com, there are several bearings so I want to be sure I order the right the bearings.

Anyone know the Yamaha PN for the updated PTo side bearing?
Should I replace other bearings? PN's?

I also plan on doing the following.
Replace rings, clean carbs, and other regular maintenance.

Thanks for any help people can provide.

Mark

You either need a 98 case or have yours machined in order to use the updated 98 bearings.

I wish I had kept the box. I replaced the mag side bearing (have not heard of any problems with the PTO side) with 98 bearing (I have the 97). an old timer from Yamaha told me how to do it and it worked fine. The 97 bearing(s) on that side did not get oiled very well and after sitting for a long time would dry and eventually bust. The 98 bearing is a large single bearing that fits in the case. The bearing needs to be aligned properly with the oil ports in order to work properly. A good shop can align and pin that bearing. The bearing is expensive, but so is a total rebuild. I did mine and it runs great. This bearing problem was also noted in a recent Snowmobile magazine. Keep us posted.

Maddo why do you need a 98 case?I blew my cases apart ;ast year on my 98 and just rebuild the engine using 97 cases? The only diferenc I could tell between them was externally the 98 cases had 6holes where it mount on like engine stand or something othere wiase everything was the same.

take your old bearings (or the # from the improved bearing you want) to Motion industries (used to be Berry Bearing) They are the largest bearing distributor in the country and will hook you up at a decent price too.

The 98 has a BIG roller bearing on the mag side and the 97 had a dual ball bearing. You must dill a hole for the anti rotation pin of the 98 bearing. I had mine done by Meyer Yamaha in ishpeming, MI. I sent him the two case halfs and the new bearing and crank and he returned it assembled for pretty cheap. If my memory was right it was less then 100.00 with shipping both ways.

97 700sx engine case repair

Hello everyone.

Thanks for the information so far as its been very helpful.

For the updated 1998 magneto side crank bearing, the microfice shows the big roller bearing (PN 93390-00023-00, $140.00) but also shows another conventional bearing (PN 93390-00023-00, $35.00) that appears to be encapsulated by the roller bearing or just adjacent to it. Does this make sense that I need to order both parts?

I will be sending the crank case to some reputable shop to do the repair but want to make sure I have the right parts ready for the rebuild.

I think

crank

Hey guys.

When I retrofit my good crank from my current 700sx motor into the new(used) cases, is there a need to send that crank out to have the rods replaced and to make sure the crank isn't out of phase?

Or should I likely be okay.

Thanks to all of those who replied to my questions, especially Jwiedmeyer, as I got the old girl is back together and running. Taking the 700sx out this weekend to see how she responds.

Even after 9K miles, the pistons and cylinders were in great shape apparently so just went ahead and replaced the rings. It appears the culprit for tearing the case apart at the recoil was due to one of the recoil mounting bolts getting inside and ripping the inners of the case opening to shreads. If you notice on the 700sx , there is a small opening where the recoil mounts to the case and this opening was enough for a bolt to bounce into apparently.

Thats our guess at least.

see ya.

bearing

He ended up fabricating the pin. He charged me 220.00 for the whole job. Pretty fair in my book. Heading up to Maine tomorrow morning to try her out.

where can i find this bearing? #24 93390-00023-00 and #26 8DF-1142A00-00 at a good price ?

I would go with either richmotorsports, ronnies, or portyamaha. Below is ronnies and portyamaha pricing w/o shipping

(replaces 8DF-1142A00-00) $37.34

port yamaha

is this bearing and sleeve hard to replace?

my whole motor is apart so i want to change these bearings and put the newer 98 bearing and sleeve on, is it just the bottom case that needs to be machined for the bearing or it both halves? the half of a 98 top case and the bottom of a 97 case wouldnt work together right?
