Studding a 97sx w/1.25 Ripsaw...

I have a 97 700sx with a 1.25" Ripsaw and I Just put in 144 1325 Gold Diggers.
I have changed my drivers to 8" and adjusted gearing accordingly, I actually bought the kit from Maxximum Performance last year.
I looks like I have plenty of front exchanger clearance but I only have about 1/2" from the lug tips to the tunnel protectors. This seems much to close and I believe the track will tend to rub especially during braking.
I'm hoping someone else has performed this same modification and can give some advise on whether or not they had rubbing issues???
I was thinking about changing the upper (large) bogies to a smaller diameter to give extra clearance???

you will be fine.. i put a 1.25 in track on mine with studs and still have original drivers...no problem...run er.............
 
yammy, you mean you still have the 9 tooth drivers? what length of stud did you put in? I was looking at my clearance for studding and using the 9 tooth drivers and it looks like i'd have lots of room at the front exchanger, just curious. I know there are a couple of people that haven't had problems with 1.25 studded tracks and many many others say you can't do it without swapping to 8 tooths.
 
Yep you did the right thing with 8t drivers that's the only way you can run studs with a 1.25" track.
 
How about only the 1/2" of clearance from the track lugs to the tunnel protectors though? Did any of your tracks ever rub against them???

sorry to say ,pro, but that is simply untrue. I have a 97 sx that has 9 tooth drivers , 1.25 track and 1.275 megabit studs,and i dont have an issue! maybe your thinking of a 1.5 in track.

I got maybe an 1/8 inch clearance on the front protectors, but it will wear in.clearence is clearence, if it clears you should be fine

I got plenty of clearance at the front exchanger it's the clearance at the tunnel protectors I'm worried about. With only a 1/2" I believe that when the track 'expands' as it does while spinning, and especially when braking, it will hit them. What is your clearance from your tunnel protectors to the track lug tips?

Tthats the exact purpose of the tunnel protectors , to let the track hit them in those situations intead of the tunnel , where the studs would reak havoc!

I understand that, however the track should not continuosly rub as I believe it will when the track is expanded at high speed. There's at least 1/2" of play when the track is adjusted so it will 'balloon' as it spins. Can anyone give me there static tunnel protector clearance with a studded 1.25" track that they know does not rub (excessively)???

I dont think ballooning is going to be a big problem, the only place the clearence may be a 1/2" is near the front by the drive axle. Under acceleration, the track will be pulled tight at that point. When you let off or brake it will probably balloon and hit, but not continuosly like you think.
Good luck, hopefully someone can give you their dimensions.

You're probably right but hopefully I can get someone else's dimension. I would hate to get up and find out that it rubs badly!
Of coarse all this is mute if we don't any SNOW!!!!

yammy well I ment if you run longer studs like 1.32 not studs that are barely taller than the lugs.To me that doesn't make sense to run 1.28 stud with a 1.25" track.

I thought you meant you cud'nt run that size track in the sx's w/o changing drivers........and you r probaly right about running longer studs, I did a mod on my track wereas i clipped the nubs down the center so i cud run those particular size studs
