Hyfax wear at bump stop - 05 Pro Mountain

I have an 05 Mtn Viper - the sliders are down to the line betweeen the idlers with only about 400 miles on them - all other threads seem to talk about wearing at front of rail - is thier anything that can be done to help with this - the track is loose.
 
I run ice scratchers whenever I am riding in anything less than powder. I have since taken all my wheels off except for the top and rear ones and have had decent luck.
 
Same as nben............loosen track a little. 1/2" with no pull.
Still have front wheels on and my hyfax wears worse where the wheels are.

The track is loose - almost 1-1/2" of sag with no weight. Thier is little to no wear anywear else along the slider - just from the idler by the torsion spring to the back idler (About 18" span)
One of the other guys I was riding with has a 04 Viper Mountain (Old skid) and he had little wear on his hyfax - exact same riding conditions.
 
Slider wear can be a tricky thing to figure out. Do you have any melted plastic on your track clips? Is you track fully clipped, or every 3rd window? What were the conditions you were riding on?

Remember, sliders are there to wear out so other parts don't. Heat can be one of the biggest killers as can abrasives like snirt. Heat can also cause things like track delamination. If you feel your sliders sticking at all, you need to find some snow! Ice scratchers have allowed me to travel on icy trails with my 2" track in order to get to the good riding without overheating my sliders or my sled.......something I could not have done previously.
 
Forgot to mention, the tracks sounds like it is about right.......any looser and you may start ratcheting without extros.
 
Yes there is some melted plastic on the clips - the conditions were mainly trails - about 50% were groomed rest was ditch banging - the track is stock with only every 3rd clipped - I know that it is too much track for mainly trail riding but I don't want to give it up when it comes to the meadows etc. I could understand better if others had the same problem but I was riding with an 04 Mtn Viper and a 01(?) Mountain Cat (Both with 2" tracks) and they did not seem to have the problem. I would add another set of boggies but I can't find a set that would work in the middle - rail is low at that point.

there is a thread about moving your first idler forward, instead of adding a third wheel, i just did this, havent tried it but noticed right away that the trachk isnt in contact with the track so it must remove some friction. Also if your limiter straps are all the way out slidders will wear quicker.

The melted plastic means the sliders have overheated. It's not good for the track and also not good for the sled. If there isn't enough snow to keep the sliders cool/lubricated then there isn't much cooling going on with the heat exchangers either. If it were me I would add scratchers and be done with it. It's hard to compare from sled to sled as they all will have different riders and won't track in the same areas 100% of the time.....too many variables. Punching and fully clipping the track would help some too, but I have no problem with my every-third-window track........ as long as I run my scratchers in marginal snow.
 
also in low snow conditions long track sleds with a track that is too lose, the track will make waves under the rails, and wear unevenly. My 151 had a habit of wearing out at the bump stops untill I tightened it up a little
 
My 03 Viper was real easy on the slides, I did have scrachers though. The 05 Vector eats them like candy, I've gone to fully clipped track and extrovert drivers, loosened the track and still have scrachers. They always wear at the bend in the rails. Polaris's rear idlers are right on the bend. Yamaha has them on either side. I think there is something to Polaris's logic.

Check the tension on your front shock, if it is too tight you will melt the front of the sliders, been there done that, i also replaced my front outside wheels with polaris wheels, they are a little bigger, therefor takes some of the sharp angle when the track contacts the sliders
 
Thanks for all of the replies - I am going to open the rest of the window's and add a set of scratchers. Will look into clipping the rest later on. If I still need can the marginal snow wheels be put to the inside near the bump stop as this is where I am getting the most problems.
