Last year I stretched my 97 700SX out to 136. I went to 8 tooth drivers and left the gearing stock (23 - 40 I believe). Works pretty good, but with the smaller drivers it is over-reving some. I figured I might as well try and go down a tooth on the bottom gear and get some top end back and hopefully get the revs back down a bit as well. A friend went to Haydays and I asked him to look for a 39 tooth gear for me. He brought back a 23, 39 and a chain. I finally went to put it in tonight and you guessed it, it is 15 wide. My stock stuff is 13. First lesson learned, SRX's must have had wider chains. :o|

So, am I pretty much hooped? Seeing how I have the top gear, bottom gear and chain, can I put the 15 wide setup in, or is it too wide for my chaincase? Everyone also talks about hyvo chains being best. How do you tell the difference between hyvo and non-hyvo?

Does anyone have a 13 wide 39 tooth gear for me??

:?

As Long As You Use The Sprockets And Chain Combo Together You Can Run The 15 Wide With No Problem. The Hyvo Stuff Is From 2000 And Newer Sleds, Its Alot More Radiused On Tooth Contours And Edges, It Wont Be Anything You Can Notice Riding The Sled, So You Have The Right Parts, Just Bolt Them In As A Set. The Stuff In Your Sled Right Now Is Just Std 13 Wide. Hyvo Is Also 13 Wide But The Chain And Sprockets Are A Set, Same As 15 Wide, And 13 Wide Std. If You Get A Chance To Look At A Tech Update Manual At Your Dealer, It Shows You Pics Of This Stuff.

Check out Royal Distributing site on gears and chains, it will show what will fit and what year sleds 15 , 13 and 3/4 hyvo gears and chains came in.

I put the gears and chain in tonight and from what I could figure, you have to not put the spacer on in between the top cover bearing and jackshaft nut. The cover wouldn't seat properly with it on there. I confirmed that the spacer isn't there on the parts diagram. On the bottom, you must still need the spacer in behind the gear to keep the gear in the correct location. I put it all together, and it looks like it is very tight to the cover now. I ran it in the stand and there is no bad vibes or grinding noise, so I think I am ok.

Sound about right??

;):D

the spacers go on behind the gears closest to the chaincase, then the sprockets, then washer and top nut and bottom washer and bolt, theres no spacers on the outside, you need to take it back aprt and put the sapcer in there or it will break the chain in no time from letting it move sideways on shaft.

BTW_ if you look at the spacers, the bottom one is thinner then the top one is, just so you have them correct.

And even when you have thinner spacer behind lower gear, verify both gears with chaincase edge.

Roh-oh! Now I am a bit worried. The chain case I believe is the same part number between mine and the SRX. The cover is a different part # though. I wonder if the SRX cover is dished out more to give more clearance? The spacer I was talking about is #25 on the SX diagram. On the SRX diagram it is not there at all, so I think I am OK there.

I put a straight edge across the front of the chaincase and the chain / gears did not touch the straight edge. However, there was very little clearance in between them. Maybe an 1/8th of an inch, and that was with the gasket on the chaincase. I was most worried about the bolt head hitting the cover after it was torqued down. Like I said it sounded OK when it ran?? I put my hand on it and felt no vibration either.

Am I worried about nothing here?

I was paranoid about my chaincase, so I went for a quick rip and then pulled the cover off to check if there was any rub marks. Everything looked honkey dorey, so I should be good to go.

Thanks MrViper!
