Hello Guys hows it going? I got a little problem I have a 97 Mountain Max 700 and It has a low end bogging problem, If I just crack it out of the whole it will bog and If I let off it will backfire. It bog around 5 Grand but after 6 Grand it just takes off. If I just got slow on the throttle and get going then crack it goes fine. The motor has alot of miles on it 7,000 YIKES@!. I checked the compression and all three cylinders are giving me 123 PSI. I cleaned the carbs about 100 miles ago. Just looking for some Ideas Thanks bobby

Hmmm I'm pretty sure I cleaned them too, I took two jets out of each carb. a little one and big one. Its also a hard starter when its cold. I'm just at a loss, Could it be clutching causing this?
Backfire is carbeuration. You running old gas? Clutching won, tmake a sled backfire.

Check you pilots you may have missed a pice of crud, check your fuel
screws too also check what position your needles are at.
fuel filter pluged?
f/p working good?

Backfiring is usually caused by a lean pilot circuit. Open the hood with the engine running. Block off about 2/3 of the air intake slot with a glove and wick the throttle. If it begins to sparkle, the pilot circuit needs more fuel. Could be restricted jet or passage way. Never seen fuel screws do it but its possible.
did you take out the air jets.I have fixed many sleds like that and it's either the air jets or pilot jets.
Old rule of thumb,
Back-fire out the pipe = rich
Back fire thru carb = lean
Back-fire out the pipe = rich
Back fire thru carb = lean
If all seems ok in the carbs I would check out the pto & mag seal for leak...

what theblues says, if carbs are ok. i had that happen and the symptons were as you described. one of the crank seals was bad.

I had a similar problem a while back. It ended up being the throttle overide switch.
I just unplugged the two to the TOS, then plugged them into one another.
Haven't had a problem since.

Well I'm about to destroy this piece of shit, I can't get this thing to run for nothing. It starts up after about 20 pulls. When she's started she just has no power at all sometimes it backfires out of the exhaust. And when she idles for a few minutes she gets really boggy and giving me alot of dark exhaust almost dark grey. She will run right up to 8K but no power no pull and she sounds like hell. I've cleaned the carbs and everything. Could it be a weak fuel pump? It does have over 7,000 on it. I will try to get a sounds clip of it today. Thank you
P.S. Does the 97 have the TORS switch?

call it a piece of sh?! and you may not get help here.
There are 3 jets to clean when you do your carbs. They have to be removed sparyed and then use a compressor to blow them out. Clean float and bowl as well. There is a switch mounted on the center of the carb rack with 2 wires..this is the TORS. Unplug these 2 wires (they are plugged close to the CDI) and plug the 2 wires from the harness together and try your machine again.

Did you check the crank seals?.
They are easy to check, let the sled idle, then spray "start gas" onto the seals (one behind the primary clutch and one behind the flywheel. There is a little hole in the crankcase above the flywheel (besides the recoil) , spray into the hole to check the flywheel side seal.
If the idle changes when you spray, then you have a blown seal.
Also if it races at idle it`s a sign of false air.
Try spraying around your inlets too.
Good luck

Sorry about calling it a piece of SHIT, but damn. I got about 300 miles this season pulled the motor once, pulled the carbs twice and still can't ride. I put brand new plugs in and that made no difference. I let it idle and sprayed on the clutch side and all around and didn't hear no RPM change. The TORS switch has already been disconnected by the owner before me. I have a small sounds clip of it, I had to upload it to SF and here is a link to it. Thank you for all your help. Bogging If confused, I'm giving it gas and then letting off and giving it some more.

it does not sound like TORS to me. Are you firing on all cylinders. Did you check spark on all plugs. Did you remove and clean all 3 jets. We need all the info possible so we can eliminate some possabilities.

I have blue spart on all three cylinders the middle cylinder didn't have was a more dull blue but I figured I didn't have it grounded as good. I'm not aware of the 3rd jet? I cleaned the two jets in the bowl, The Piolot jet the small one and the main jet what is the 3rd one?

This link will show you the air jet. Look in the tech pages at cleaning carbs.
You should clean the air jet, pilot and main.
