Help!! Viper Electrical Problem (snow On Ground)

well it finally snowed here and i took my viper out to ride last night and i started it up and noticed the gauge acted weird when i started it. I started riding around and it was reading everything correctly then the tach dropped to zero and the gauge went blank but it was still lit up then everything came back and then it went blank again. it just keeps doing this all other electrical things like lights and stuff are fine except the electric start because the battery needs recharged i wiggled all the connections up there and it still kept doing it. i have a friend bringing his sled to the shop tomorrow so i can plug my gauge in on his sled and see if it is the gauge and then plug his gauge into mine to see if it is wiring or something more serious. i washed the sled last night but it was pretty well dry before it went outside. do you think water may have froze in it and caused this. oh the sled also does it while idling but usually only at idle when i first start it.
 
the viper wire harnesses are subjected to wear underneath the motor....and will rub through and cause all sorts of electrical issues just like you described. i would suggest that this is probably the situation with your sled. you will need to disconect the wire harness from the front of the cab(headlights, etc.) and pull it back through behind the motor and have a look at the wires.
Before you pull it back, Make sure you fasten a wire or string to the end of the harness so you can pull it back through when your done.

hopefully your only problem is that a wire has rubbed through and is exposed....make sure you wrap the wires up good with electrical tape before you send it back under the motor...

it will continue until you charge the battery. All yamaha 2 stroke electric start sleds do it when battery is low. Maxdlx
 
why would the battery make the gauge mess up. the battery has been low for a couple weeks and it never did it when i started it in the last couple days until yesterday
 
every es yamaha I have ever owned will have the tach go nuts, when the battery is low. Try running it with a charger on the battery. Maxdlx
 
if my viper er had enough juice to run, the tach would work fine. i would check the harness. i wrapped mine before it got a chance to rub.
