How to tell when front shocks are going bad?

Other than the ride quality, how would I tell when my front ohlins need a rebuild?
 
somone that sells rebuilds will tell you every 2-4000mls, off the record friend that rebuilds shocks told me a steel bodied shock can go wwwaaaaayyyyy past that point.

What did you guys end up getting up there yesterday?
 
Another way to check, for one problem anyways, is take one shock off, and compress it against something. If you can not "bury" the shaft, this is an indication that oil has gotten on the wrong side of the valves/seals. Other things to check for is oil leaks arund the shaft seals, and pitting on the shafts themselves.
 
Weather men predicted 4 to 8 inches one day then 4 to 10 then next day, we got about 3 inches and freezing ran total, what a let down for here in VT
 
I had nearly 10k miles on the ones that were on my 97 600sx, and they still felt and were fantastic. dont worry about them, they are well built :)
