Why is it not advisible to run your sled without the primary clutch on?undefinedDid I wreck my crank by reving it without the primary clutch on it? My TDC on my 700 sx cylinders dont seem to look right. Troubleshooting a backfiring problem and before you offer your own suggestions I can tell you that I have the service manual on CD-ROM and have stripped down this sled completely. All thats left is the, crank out of phase, thing. I love my vmax but after four weeks of wrenching.............................................................................................................................................I'm spent Please help

With the primary off, the lack of mass, and therefore inertia, can very easily result in wildly overreving the engine. If you give the throttle a big blip as you normally would (with the clutch on), could go boom! It can be done with caution/common sense. I am therefore stricty prohibited from said act.

to check the crank phase is very simple, attach degree wheel on pto stub with pointer attached to a head stud, using a piston stop locate TDC, zero your pointer on degree wheel and then mark your degree wheel, move stop to 2nd cylinder and find TDC, mark degree wheel again with a 2 beside mark, then on to 3 same process, the cylinders should all be 120 degrees apart at TDC.
To find TDC n case you didnt know with the piston stop is you rotate engine to left till piston hits stop, mark wheel, the rotate engine back oppisite direction(right) till hits stop, the amount of degrees in between your marks divided by 2 is true TDC.

thanx guys; Ill get a hold of someone tomorrow with a dial indicator and degree wheel
Well I finally have the whole scoop. Thanx to a timely tip from SRXer and mrviper700 I had the block brought in and I have officially "spun the crank". Although this seems ,to the average knuckle buster, to be unfortunate for me, you dont know how relieved I am to finally be chasing this problem down instead of it beating me up. Just a little tip for all you home mechanics out there DONT RUN YOUR SLEDS WITHOUT THE PRIMARY CLUTCH INSTALLED. I had never heard of this concept before and even when I asked the Yamy mechanic in my town, all he said was that it wasnt a good idea. Thats all.No whys or how comes. I hate to even be typing the words "live and learn"but..................................................
