How does a 02 Viper with 525 miles on it go for $4500, but a 04 Viper S with 715 miles and upgrades/extras a guy can only get $3850 for it? The 02 and 04 are not very similar sleds, really ..... what do you guys think of this? Shouldn't the 04 be worth more (better seat, ohlins, dcs, digital hand/thumb warmers ...)

As much as I LOVE 2 strokes. In 2015, all companys in AMA(motocross) are doing away with 2 strokes...Honda just announced that this is the last year of there 2 stroke line-up. I feel that snowmobiles will not be far off. I have been trying to sell my 2-stroke SRX 600 and it's in mint shape! and I can't even sell it for 2K.
Eventually, 4-strokes will out win 2-strokes...IMHO
So let the flaming begin

Only problem is 80hp 500 cc 4 stroke or 105 hp power valved 2 stroke? I know which I would pick. If people wouldn't buy them they wouldn't build them.

both are too expensive in the current market. nothing is selling for anything, but the S should be WAY more than the 02 with its issues and all the accesories that were standard on the S. there is a dealer in my area selling buy 2 get 1 free, if that tells you anything. and they are talking NEW sleds too

Yep...the Viper S should be worth more...but maybe stateboySRX has a point...There could be a smorgasborg for cheap 2 strokes coming ahead...I own one aswell..and am already pumped about getting a 4 stroker...however...thats a long ways ahead for me...and my two stroke for the moment will be attached to me like a 3rd testical...
but the way Yamaha is goin...allot of heads are turning in the blue direction...nice to see...

Powerband, MPG, Reliability, and Lower Emissions is why everything is going 4 Strokes. Plus the option of a Turbo or S/Cer for your 4 stroke sled is nice to and its still reliable and gets good mpg vs. a 2 stroke turbo sled, reliabilty and mpg drop massively. And even still the 4 stroke more than likely will have more power.(Pending Set-up) But I have yet to see a 390HP 2 stroke, seen a 2 stroke PSI Cat motor pull 328hp but its still not 390.
I will ALWAYS own at least one 2 stroke machine cause I personally like the powerband and the SOUND is to die for. Theres nothing like it.

xsivhp what are you talking about? sale prices on ebay for the two sled? if so, I'd guess a shill bidder on the 02 viper....

I believe that 4 strokes will take over the trail sled market very quickly, as for Mountain sleds, they have a long ways to go.

I kinda wondered that too - if something seems wrong it probably is, right?DanQ said:xsivhp what are you talking about? sale prices on ebay for the two sled? if so, I'd guess a shill bidder on the 02 viper....
I run Polaris VES in my viper - no smoke, I've regualrly gotten 14.5 - 15.5 mpg with it, and it only uses a quart of oil about every 200 miles.
Say you ride 2000 miles a year - takes a long time to make up the difference in cost between a 2 and 4 stroke IMO. The only downside to my viper is the seating position some of the time and 10% of the time the rear suspension.
I see 4 stroke motors getting rebuilt just like 2 strokes. 4 strokes still use oil and still need oil changes, and 2 strokes are still lighter.

If your seeing 4 strokes being rebuilt as often as 2 strokes then you know some people that dont take care of there sh**. As MRVIPER has said countless times on here if you want your 2 stroke running LIKE NEW its a GOOD IDEA to change out your rings every 2500-3000 miles. Some people think its crazy but do your research and youll come to find out the punishment that 2 stroke rings and pistons take and have to withstand, they wear out much faster cause of this. So if you want your 2 stroke running like new you'll be spending more TIME and MONEY. Unlike with a 4 stroke 2500-3000mi is nothing. Yes 2 stroke are lighter but the longitivity is not of a 4 stroke. So once you lighten the rest of the sled up it CAN become the same weight of a 2 stroke sled or lighter, but lightweight parts cost MORE MONEY.
Take the new Phazer for instense, already lighter than a Viper. Then throw a turbo on the Phazer, guess what BYE BYE Stock Viper and maybe even a SRX or Piped Viper. All depends on BOOST.

ExpertX - buddy of mine has 9550 miles on a 2000 SXR 700 - The engine has never been touched and it runs great.
I don't think anyone really wants a snowmobile with 25,000 miles on it - what fun is it to ride the same sled for 20 years? lol!
I know he's pushing his luck, but I can't say I'm not impressed by the mileage.

Its runs GREAT but does it run like it did when it was new, he doesnt know cause he close to 7500mi past due. So thats means he been riding it with warn out rings for 7500mi, means throughout that TIME AND MILEAGE he has been losing power and not knowing it. When I talked to Don he told me he had REBUILT motors for people and they called him back asking what he did cause there sled had so much power. When all he did was a rebuilt. You can start losing power and not notice it esp. when you only ride so many times outta the year.
