i was wondering what was the fastest year was for the 440 exciter. my friends dad used to own 2 exciters and he said that they flew. he claimed that once he and his friends were on a lake {he owned a 80 440 exciter, friend owned a 91 indy 500, other friend owned a 82 john deere liquifire} he said that he started out the he was in last place but he slowly started gaining ground on the liquifire and passed him, then he slowly passed the indy 500. is he BS us or is he actually telling us the truth. his kid now has a 340 enticer and that thing has balls. i mean it beats my 440 sportfire pretty easily. and the exciter has 15 more horse than the 340 enticer. my friend is now looking at buying a exciter and he wants the fastest one possible.

It's probably not BS. Indy 500's and later Liquifires aren't big on speed for 440-500 L/C's. There's some mild porting changes from year to year, mainly in the piston for intake timing. 76' and 77' both use a tunnel similar to the GPX. The 78+ have more taper to the tunnels for better deep snow performance. 78+ also have larger gas tanks/shorter seats, and gauges up on the cowl of the hood instead of in the gas tank cover like the previous ones. The clutches on the 76' are a bit slippy. They were improved for 77' with a ramp/roller style clutch. I think the clutches were upgraded again with stronger bushings in 78'. I think anything 78' and up would be slightly faster but alot of people made upgrades to the older ones. There's really not that much difference. 340 Enticers are fast but I took 2 of them out with my 1978 340 Exciter!
It's not quite as good in the deep snow like an ET but it's alot faster on packed surfaces or ice.

I was told by a dealer that the 76 &77s were the fastest ones ,because they had a Keihen Slide valve carburetor and the 78 s' on up had a butter fly carb, and that the slide valve flowed a Little more air, I had a 76 back then and my friend had a 78 and on a race we would be dead even up to about 50Mph then I would slowly start to walk away but not by much,even with the poor primary clutch. I had my 76 Clutch replaced twice because it would start to crack, that was the biggest problem with the 76 s'.

yea. how could a single carberator model beat a dual carb in the deeper snow. wouldnt the single carb be lacking power in any deep snow. also we like 2 ride on the roads when there is an inch of ice on the bottom and a hardpack on top. we really get flying when we go down the hills. my 250 enticer got up to 70 mph going downhill. that thing was screaming, then my friends 340 flew past me at around 80. but like i said thats basicly ice and down hill, wouldnt even get close to see these numbers on flat ground.

My 78 440 with the mods , and the secondary tightend i can get 130-140 kpm out of it , i gues thats 75-85 mph
