Hello Everyone well the first major set back of this year of riding. I was out bank hoping and notice my Steering got real tight. After getting home found out that my Left Side (Clutch Side) Trailing arm shredded apart. What trailing arms can I use on this sled, Can I use on my 1997 Mountain Max 700, Will any others fit or only MM's? Does anyone have one of this trailing arms for sale? Thank you bobby

WOW, Never seen nothing like that. Is there rust?
Did it bend the running board where the trailing arm mounts, If it did and you have insurance, it will most likely be totalled!!

Wow.
I had my right arm off for a bit of cleanup work and you would be surprised how bad the welds are and the interior rusting. I'm thinking about replacing my '97's arms soon. Money is a bit tight now but if it were not an issue then I'd have a nice shiny set of new arms and rods.

I've heard from one of my dealer mechanics that somtimes they would blow in some
of that Spray insulator foam to help keep the condensation out and strengthen em up
a bit...unsure if that works...but it sounded like it wouldn't hurt anything...

Say No To Spray Foam
DO NOT SPRAY INSULATOR FOAM IN THE TRAILING ARMS!!!!!!
The arm is designed to buckle if you hit something if it is rigid you will transfer the hit to the rear mount and bend your tunnel.

I'm not so sure insulator foam would stiffen the arms all that much. The problem is the foam may or may not be waterproof. If it isn't then you filled your arm with a spounge to keep moisture inside the t-arm and promote rust. If it is waterproof and if there are any voids in the insulation then you just provided nice little pockets to keep in moisture and promote rust. No Foamy is my motto unless were talkin about beer.

Spray foam is water proof, you can use it in commercial applications without a vapour barrier, and yes it will stiffen them enough to bend your tunnel I have seen it happen!
No Foamy is my motto unless were talkin about beer, I second that! LOL

No there isn't that much rust, It looks like it collapsed where the shock mount connects to the trailing arm. This really sucks because right now were getting hit with snow too. Ok While looking at Yamaha website part catalog there are different part numbers for the MM and The VMAX for the Trailing arm, The part number for the MM is 8CS-2382E-01-00 and the One for the VMAX is 8CV-2382E-01-00 and Other VMAX are 8CR-2382E-01-00. The only letter changing is the one after the C, Why would they have different part numbers, Ahhh heck I just wanna make sure it will work, Not to worried its a old sled. Thank you Bobby

He is EXACTLY right, and that is the same reason that the aftermarket trailing arms aren't a bad idea of you like to crash into things a lot and find yourself bending a lot of trailing arms. For one they are much cheaper than stock, and two they are thinner material and not as well built so when you hit something the arm bends instead of the mount on the tunnel, which is really catastrophic and expensive to fix right, not to mention very time consuming. Like i said though, the aftermarkets are definately cheaper to pay for and also cheaper built, they wont last as long as stock because they are thinner and will rust quicker, and they may start to bow a little bit if you are riding on some REAL garbage trails and the front is taking a lot of hits or you like to jump a lot and are bottoming out the front suspension.

Well after doing some searching and looking around, I decieded to get a new aftermarket trailing arm instead, I know that there not as strong but they are alot cheaper and my stock one lasted over 7,000 miles so if I get 2 or 3,000 out of the aftermarket I'm happy, I do alot of jumping and off the beaten path lol. Thanks for all of your help and tips. The Trailing arm should be in Friday or Monday, I will post a pic of the aftermarket trailing arm when its installed. Thanks Bobby
