I bought a 2001 Venture 500 XL, Mileage has been averaging around 9 mpg. I noticed that this thing revs quite high before clutch kicks in, belt is within specs, I'm wondering if I can play with clutching, i.e. weights ,springs, at about 6500 rpm I'm only going about 30 m.p.h. otherwise the engine starts and runs fine. previous owner may have messed with something. any help would be appreciated. thanks, wildmann
where about do you live in wi there are quite a few members from southern wi.I'm shure someone would be happy to help you pull the clutch apart and see if anything is worn.

I live near Beaver Dam, I have a friend that can do this stuff in his sleep but before I bother him I just wondered if anybody had any ideas where to start, Or maybe 9 mpg is all I can expect, This is my wifes sled so I'll just make her pay for the gas. Thanks, Wildman

I had a similar problem on my venture. Turns out my primary was very dirty both on the shives and the internals of the clutch, such as the part which the shive slides over. I just took tool cleaner over it all, then wiped it all down good. All this was done with the primary still on the sled and never removed a thing. I used a pry bar and some rags (to keep bar from damaging anything), and forced the primary closed, or very close to closed, which allowed me to clean the inside of the primary better.
Then after it was all cleaned, I lubed lightly the shaft on which the primary shives slides on (this is not the part where the belt goes), then it worked like a total champ!!. Use a dry lubricant if you can find one, and just a little lube will work fine.
Otherwise, make sure that all your rollers are moving smoothly in the primary and there isnt any roughness in the primary, which could mean a gone bushing.
Also, the 485 fan motor sucks gas hard when your driving fast at all, but when your cruising slowly and consistently, its good on gas.
