how and why would one notch a perfectly good reed and do aftermarket reeeds need to be notched (carbon tech reeds or vforce reeds)

notching the reed clears the way to the transfer port, making a few more ponies. adding spacers do basically the same thing. there is a write up in the tech section by turk i think, gives all the dimensions and such.

with spacers, make sure your carb bowl doesnt wear a hole in it. some times it will chaffe on the stearing pole.
if you ever have the motor out, install a srx/vector one so it will clear with no problems

You don't notch the reed. You notch the reed cage.

Actually you notch the reed stopper. And instead of installing a different steering column you can also just install a couple washers under the rear motor mounts on the engine to get the engine to sit up a little higher so that the carb doesn't hit the steering column if you are using reed spacers instead of the reed notch.
