Well, I'm about ready to throw in the towel. I just can't seem to dial in my Viper. I'm kind of a "learn as I go" type person and have ben using this forum to gain my knowledge. I've spent some good money on upgrades for my sled with no luck making any real improvements. I'm thinking my best bet may be to find someone that can dial in the clutching. Most dealers don't want to waste their time or give the attention to it that I desire. Was hoping someone could help a fellow TY member out and refer me to someone that could give me some hands on assistance. I'm located in Windham.

It looks like you got a good set up already? What's the problem? Not fast enough? Please explain...
Exactly. Just feels week throughout. I've got stock 02 doo 700's beating me. Everything I've read about the Expert and clutch setup, this thing should be ripping out of the hole and midrange. I've changed from 70 to 60 twist and only max rpms out at 8100-8200. Just really feels like a dog. Maybe I just mis my old SRX, but I've read of many guys dialing in their stock Viper with clutch work and knocking down some pretty good sleds.

I think you said when you compared it to an SRX... I had one also and I am going back to the srx. The simple truth is that the Viper is a single piped 120 hp machine. The stock 700 Doos will keep up with it. and some may win. I think you might be expecting a little too much out of it. What you have there is a heck of an all around machine though. Don't get down. Chip away at it and enjoy it.
Ya, I know it will never be an SRX. I just want to know that it is running at its optimum performance.
Thanks for the encouragement.

what kind of riding do you do 90 percent of the time?? maybe a more aggressive weight would be in order, the stock weights seem to take off ok but are flat feeling in the mid to upper section of the powerband. let us know and we can get ya happy again, it is only a 120 something hp sled, but it can run decent.
Aggressive trail riding. In fact, I believe I baught the helix and green spring off you. What's involved with changing the weights? Adding the helix ang green spring brainless. Digging too deep into things scares me a little. Just don't want to screw things up. As I said, "I'm learning as I go".
Would the stock spring at 80 be better for me?

well I interpret aggressive trail riding as short winding trails with lots of tight turns, sections of moguls and short field racing, no more then about 600ft long at best, 0-70mph is the most used range on average. does this sound like what you do?

On average, yes. Although, several trips a year are up in the county running railroad beds and long, staright, groomed trails.
Ya, I know, I want the best of both worlds.
Thinking I need an SRX or new Apex for those trips.

kirkswim (my brother) has a 2002 viper. never could get the clutching right with the can on. always wanted to underrev 2-300 rpm. put the stock can back on and boom. rpms where right where turk said they should be.
we really like how the heel clickers (one peice weight might have wrong brand name) make his sled pull in the trails. that is what it is set for, corner to corner in the trails. his set up is posted in here under viper clutching. maybe this is what you need to do to the primary to "wake it up" at trail rpms.
just a thought.

You need higher rpm's !
Lets start with your rpm's 8100 to 8200 is way to low ! You must have a hard time getting to 90mph ! I dont care with what the other's say stock clutch set up is the fastest . Vipers are very happy reving at 8700 to 8800 rpm's. If you what more mid range punch with very little top end loss go with my clutch set up . 48/40 helix. Run 3 grams heel, 1st hole empty & 3-4 grams tip ( heelclikers )with the red primary spring & use a green yammie secondary spring at 60 degree twist.
Also go for a engine torque limiter kit and get a track that can hook up and you will be very happy also some good aggresive studs like 144 up the middle will do wonders and you will very little track spin. Make sure your belt is in good condition. Im reving at 8500 but would still like another 100. Dont forget viper's make their peak power at 8600 to 8700 rpm's so 8500 isnt all that bad.
I think kirkswim as the same set as me and it works great. Ive have more punch at mid range and top speed than my friends prox 700.
The set up that alot of viper owner's use on this site seems to be the 53/43 helix and green spring , I tried this setup for a brief period and couldnt get pass 8300 and had top speeds on the speedo at 95 mph vs stock at an average of 114mph. Every sled is a little different and some run better in certain conditions but it sounds like you sould be getting a little more out of your's . Just for fun go back to stock specs on your clutches and see how it feels. If you have a few extra $$$ try my set up and im sure you will like it !
I also ride in similar conditions like you and also have a hard time finding a good dealer to tune my machine. Good luck !

stock vipers make there power at 8400 not 8700-8800.

Your #1 performance shop!
Get rid of the MBRP silencer!!! I had a customers sled here on Saturday and it would only run 8100-8200 RPM and was a mutt!!! I rode it about 20 miles to make sure everything was up to temp, came back to the shop and simply changed the MBRP silencer back to the STOCK exhaust can and instantly picked up to 8500-8600 RPM with no other changes and the sled was way snappier and just pulled stronger! Yep, that's right, 400-500 RPM difference between stock silencer and MBRP silencer. I would bet that silencer is costing the sled 6-8 hp loss!

maim, sweet catch, I didnt even see he had a can on it, right theres a loss of power/rpms.
Quebec, the stock clutching will only run about 107mph give or take 1-2mph depending on the conditions run in, but its no where near as fast as a h/c set up like you have. You can have the same top speeds with 2 differnt clutch set ups but 1 clutch set up will do something better then the other, the h/c's will walk away from stock weights.

np.
i watch for that when guys post viper clutching problems. i know we tried everything to get it to run right but that can is a pos on a viper and costs you mph and rpms.

I agree that the h/c set up is way stronger right through the power band and have seen 114 mph on the speedo last year on many long runs. My best on the viper was 119 mph on the speedo on a nearly snow free lake ! This year the best so far was 107 but less than ideal lake conditions. Also ive added the predator track with 144 studs up the middle maybe more rolling resistance ? Oh Ya i also weight 15 pounds more !mrviper700 said:maim, sweet catch, I didnt even see he had a can on it, right theres a loss of power/rpms.

Getting back to rpms' i did fool around with the set-ups last year and anything bellow 8400 rpm's you loose top end. Im going to have dig up some old mags and find the charts that show grafs at 8600 to 8700 that show the viper peaking . After 8650 the dyno grafs fall off a bit.
I will stick to my gun;s and say for peak hp on a stock viper gun for 8600 !

theres some post from today about guys using gps on vipers, they were around 107-108mph, and the speedos say like 118mph I think, take a look.
I dont remember what rpm they peak at, I have some viper single pipe, stock dyno sheets, I will see if i can find em.

Get rid of the can, run a 53/ 43 green spring at 70 degree and you must change your inner rivets to 4.5gram. with this It was night and day difference for me.
