Hey folks!!!
Its been two and a half years and since I have been having serious issues with my completly stock Vipers gas mileage. I was only getting about 90 miles to a tank of gas and sometimes could stretch it out to 100. Problem was I didn't notice anything much wrong with its performance. The only other symptom was the hand grips didn't get as warm as my buddys Viper. It sounded a little different...kinda had a "babble" instead of that "snapping sound" other vipers made.
I and "Yamaha dealer" went over the CDI (anyone want one I got a perfectly good extra),clutch, bearings, track, carburator--jets--needles--pilots--mains (at least 8 times), power valves (20 times). Spent about $1200 getting the dealer to check things over...and over that time I still got horrible gas.
Funny thing I was getting good RPM...even overreving a bit....so it never really occured to me that it could be the stator. Especially since right at the beginning of this fiasco the dealer was supposed to check the stator to make sure it was good...never again. In the end I changed my stator the other day and fired her up...........IT WAS A DIFFERENT SLED......I can't remember when it ever sounded like this. Took it for a rip and boy did I have to hang on. And the gas consumption has improved for sure....just not sure how much yet.
Anyway I'm outta here got some more miles to put on.
