guess that makes sense, the extra stuff for the powervalves and it is a phsically bigger hood and belly. you have had both right? whats your preference?

Id go with a SX 600R or an SX Venom. Its not quite as fast as the Viper, but it doesnt have the hassle of exhaust valves.
Get the shocks revalved and put a 4" articulating bar riser on it and it should suit your MX/SX background very well.

I am on a quest for a newer sled for 2008 I currently have a 96 Vmax XT 600.
Riding style Aggressive (former sx and mx racer)
Lake racing not really important
Jumping, tight trail and ditchbanging performance preferred to top end speed
Reliability a plus over max performance
prefer 2000 - 2003 model years due to price
Appreciate any assistance on this. I have been looking at 2002 Vipers but not sure what letter designations mean (R, ER etc...)

Thanks for the great feedback!
Seems like these sleds are best bang for my riding style so far
1. 2001 SX 700 R
2. 2001 SX 600 R
3. 2004 Viper S with Ohlins
4. 2002 Viper (What letter designator on this year?)
Still listening

the 02 viper was just that, no S or anything in the end. the viper could be an er though, meaning it had electric and reverse. the 600 sleds will have less power and arent as east to pop out of the ditches with, but with clutching, jetting and a good track and skis you will be getting the most out of the stock motor. if you add pipes to it you will be at around 120 hp. this really would wake up the 600, but you could get a viper with the same peak power (around 120) and get great gas and oil mileage, along with never having to rejet because of the pipes. the 700sxr is in between. not quite the top end power or low end grunt of the viper, but a lot better than the 600. the viper is the only one of the three with powervalves. hope this helps you somewhat too

Well the perfect sled for your type of riding would be a nytro, but thats just a little to much price if you looking for something a little older.
I would say viper, just for the extra mph over the sxr
