When removing the viper grips do you just need to drill out the rivet? or is there grip glue in there too? thanks

Drill out the rivit...from there its tough...although I just cut mine off the other day..but
I'm sure with some twisting and working a screw driver down the handle bar to release the adhesion might work...I wouldn't work the screw driver hard..it might separate the wires inside that hellp the heating part...

drill out the rivets then take an ircompressor and stick it in the end and the other side will blow off.
Or run sled with grips on full, shut off and twist slowly: L-R. Or due as stated in last post.

NICE IDEA!!!! I just drilled, cut and pulled like hell. they came off in about 20 pieces, kept tearing.
Yep, i had a the old shiney grip syndrum, just about killed myself last year cause my hand slipped off in the bumps at around 65 or so...rather scarey, especially when your not expecting it.
sometimes the epoxy they put them on with is tough, but if you hook the grip up to a car battery for a little bit it will get very hot, loosen the epoxy and slip right off, of course youll need gloves on to protect your hands.

Get some WD40 with the little red straw in there. A shot of it under the grip will dissolve the glue enough to twist until it breaks free. Mine came off in 1 piece really easily.

What do you use for adhesive to put them back on?

Im with mrviper, hook up a 12 battery to the grip and twist them of without a problem.
I heat them up like Don does, and then use the blow gun to pop them off like Ryan does.
Be sure to use the right epoxy to put them back on. If they slip around too much they will twist and break the element inside because the rivet holds one end in place. Then they quit working and you start over again with new ones.

What are the best heated grips to use? I've got a Viper-S with 3" riser so the bars are above the windshield. I cut holes in the ends to put those bar end knobs in and now the heated grips don't keep my hands warm, even with handguards on there. Is there a good brand of aftermarket grips that work better than the OEM Viper grips?
best epoxy is just the 2 part you mix and apply, comes in like a syringe. I have also used jb weld before in a pinch.
the old hot grips are pretty good.
the thing is when you add hooks, knobs or whatever to the bars, they act as heat sinks and cool off the bars quicker making your grips less warm.
the wrap on style grip wamers of arctic cat sleds and such are a better design and work very well, a crafty guy could adapt those and get the best of both worlds and you dont have to worry about cutting the grip element wires going thru the ends of the grips. You just use motorcycle/atv grips, these you can slip right over the wrap on elements with the air compressor method Pro116 mentioned, be sure to get atv grips though, the atv are both the same size, the dirtbike model ones have one grip larger diameter to go over the twist thortlle tube.

Removed mine off my '00 Vmax last night.... very simple.
Drilled the rivet, ran the sled for about 3 minutes with hand warmers on full, one slight twist to break them loose and then slide them right off. I only hope that putting them back on the set of Viper bars I have coming today goes as easy!
