uh...i dont know about yamaha's but ive done 4 different polaris and only one of them was easy. the biggest pain in the *** is the spring on the inside. i did it on a bravo but thats easy to get to and very basic.
im waiting for mine to go on the sx....
good luck, ill watch this thread.

Never have done one on my sled, but a buddy of mine had his go on his Summit. He got to a point with the spring that he just went out and bought a new one, and threw away the old one. When he put the new one on it took about 20 - 30 minutes and that includes putting the exhaust back on and starting it.

it is not difficult. I have done mine. If you have the repair manual it explains the proceedure very well.

Oh man what a feeling when that sucker lets go!If your lucky you can grab the tail with a pick and pull it out.

Not to easy if the spring unhooks.I lost my temper such big time .Could not get the inside end to catch on the pulley. It went aprt on me and I just about killed myself that day.Took another spring from an old Artic Cat I have and it was much easier then the Yamaha spring to wind up and snap into place.I have no patience for things like this.My hands were totally black when I had it done.Never again, next time to the dealer with it.
I have no idea why people like to take the recoil apart when the rope breaks, theres no point in it but alot of frustration on your behalf and cus words you have to make up.
Simply remove recoil from engine/sled, now get a pic tool out and flip the recoil over, you will notice the rope knot sticking thru the pulley. Using the pick tool simply pull the knot from the pulley and pull out the old rope, discard the old rope. Take your new rope and tie a knot on the end of it, heat the knot up slightly with a burnzamatic torch to keep it from slipping. Heres what makes this so simple, now that the rope has broken all the twist or recoil pull is out of the spring, so you simply grasp the pulley and spin it in the same direction the rope comes out, turn the pulley a good 5 times, complete 360 degree circles, this preloads the spring so it will pull the rope back in. Now grasp the pulley to keep it from spinning back( I use a small welding clamp and gently clamp the pulley to the housing, making sure I align the holes up with outer housing) and insert the rope to the recoil pulley knot hole and align the pulley up so the rope will come out the hole in the recoil housing, pull the rope till the knot seats in the pulley hole. Let the string recoil back into the housing keeping a good grasp on the end of it, if you wanna play it safe tie a knot in it near the handle end and check the recoil action when you pull the rope in and out, if its not retracting the rope all the way you need more spring tension, simply remove rope in reverse order and spin the pulley back a couple more times then before. There is no need to ever remove the pulley/spring from the recoil unless the spring is broken or the pulley is broken!

What MrViper700 says. Don't go in there unless you have to.
I like the welding clamp idea. Also the large C-Clamp vice grips work goo too.

mr viper, i lost abot 6" of the rope do you think i could fish the end out of the recoil and just tie it back up to the handle? if not well thanks gor the good advice......The mater
my rope on the sx broke this year as well, and wished i had read the post on not removing the pulley...lol.....spring popped out...shoooot,...take your time there really isn't much to putting it back together, its only a recoil keep telling yourself this when it pops on you.. hardest part is getting the pulley back onto the spring, winder up put the rope on and its done.
thanks Don for that post your right it only takes a few minutes not removing the spring...CP

Don't use the same cord it will just break again. You already have it apart put in a new one!
Redmater, youd still have to do everything I listed to reuse your old worn out rope, its already lost most of its spring prelaod from spinning back and it most likely will snap again before long. So for a little under $15 bucks you can have a brand new rope in it.

I have used ordinary hardware store rope with no problems on everything from a lawnmower, outboard and Sled.
Listen to Mr. Viper. Do not take your recoil apart......
Just fish in a new piece and tie it off. Then rewrap it. Make sure you wrap it the right direction.

Mrviper, thanks for the tips....it worked like a charm.
