SRX700 fouls plugs when hitting powder

Hi guys!

Last year I had a huge bogging problem when riding in powder, this year it runs much better after I put a cold air kit on it, an exhaust deflector and (don`t know if it helped, a bender canister).

Here`s the problem:
After having ridden our trail up to a place where there are some nice hills that we use to climb, then I when I go off the trail (trail in Norway = the "trace" of the sled driving infront of you) and start climbing the hills, it will for sure foul spark plug number one. It did last weekend in the very same hill and it also did it tonight, but tonight it also fouled spark plug number 3 just after I changed sparkplug number 1.

I was out of plugs, wasn`t aware of the fact that all the plugs I had in my seat-storage was fouled, so I got some BR9ES from my friend with the Viper. I know I ain`t suppose to use this plug but I couldn`t leave my sled on the mountain.. . I run premium so I hoped detonation wouldn`t occure.

It seems to happen when I hit powder fast and the snow flows fast into the hood.

Could it be caused by snow hitting the exhaust pipes or the sparkplugs themselves?.

I was really frustrated today, all of my friends were climbing the hills while desperately tried to get my sled running properly.. .

So nice to know that I wount be able to get sparkplugs tomorrow because I have to work all day, but I found some old BR9ECS plugs in the garage that didn`t look fouled.

I will try to tape off all the vents in the hood and then replace the two BR9ES plugs I put tonight with the ECS.

The questions is if I shouldn`t run the sled if it foules one of the ECS`s (which means that I will have to swop them with BR9ES since they are the only plugs I have) or if I should park it for the rest of the weekend to avoid detonation?.
This sucks.
Right now I`m in the mood where I start looking at fourstroke adds.. somedays plug fouling makes me do it. Can`t help it.

Will it run too hot if I tape off all the hood vents?. I did it last spring without any problems.. . (although it wasn`t any powder left so I really didn`t get to test if it made any difference).

I have only ever fouled 2 plugs with my srx, 1 times i was in powder in a ditch. I dont know if the powder comes in and shorts the plugs or or decreases the pipe heat enough to the point of fouling a plug. I have fouled the other plug when the machine wasnt quite warmed up enough and i squeezed the throttle a little to hard. The carb heaters might be good to turn on when in the powder
 
Maybe the spark plug boots are getting wet, sending the spark to ground and gas fouling your plugs.

That's weird. My 02 srx bogs, but I can run all day in powder without fouling plugs. So with my 98 600 too.

I had the same prob with my 98 srx 700 would run strong on the trail all day then when i went into deep power started bogging.....heres what i did put in 3 new br9ecs plugs and 3 new ngk lbo5ez plug caps.....not a problem since.....yammy caps were like 34 something here so like 3 new plugs and 3 new caps from the dealer were like 150 something what a ripoff....went to a local napa boots were 3.40 and br9ecs plugs were 7.95....also the original boots are thin tin where it clips on the plug ngk ones are much thicker lasts way longer.......sled doesnt bog once in the deep stuff now.....
 
Maybe a shot in the dark here, but you might be loading the motor too hard because the secondary is set a little too soft, thus causing a "sucking of the belt". Try tightening the secondary from where it is now.

We went riding again last night.
I found an OK BR9ECS plug in my garage so I replaced on of the two ES plugs I was running with the ECS, so I was only running with one ES plugs (cylinder nr.3). I hated to ride it with wrong plugs, but I figured as long as it had the right heat value I would be OK, and I was.

Before we took off I taped all the air vents in the hood.

We rode up to the same hill where it fouled 2 plugs on Friday night and it didn`t foul any plugs last night, run much better. But, the snow was a little more packed yesterday, but still loose. It did bog a little a few times, but as long as it didn`t foul I was happy.

I did replace the plug caps before this season because I was thinking the same as you, snow hit the engine, turned to water and made the spark jump to ground.
I thought the stock caps were good, should I get some aftermarked ones or should I just tape off the vents when I ride in powder?.

The thing is, when we go riding we switch between hardpacked snow and powder all the time. I don`t know if the engine will get enough cooling if I block the air vents?.

I wonder why Yamaha never had any trouble with the SRX when they tested it before it went into production. Or did they just ride them on lakes since that`s what they are made for.. ?.
 
Kimoaj i've been having the same problem with my 2000 SRX. Somebody suggested to me to add a few vents to the dash... it apparently helped him out with this problem. I will likely try it in a few weeks if I get the time. Have you tried adding some vents to the dash already?

Sorry to hear that you have the same problem.
Yes I have the bender cold air kit, I have three holes in the dash below the bender scoop. I know I`m getting enough air since it still runs fine when I tape off all the vents in the hood.

You may have a bogging problem either caused by lack of air or back pressure in your pipe, if the exhaust gets trapped around the outlet it can create backpressure in the exhaust which can make it bog. (mount a deflector, either homemade or from a Mountain Max).

There is one thing I haven`t thought of when it comes to the fouling issue.
In the summer I always foul 3-4-5 plugs on my dirtbike, instead of throwing them in the garbage I take a propane "torch" and heat them till the center and L (up side down) electrode get`s almost red. Then they are just fine again.
I don`t know why I didn`t think of this with my sled since it`s just the same thing.. .
Do any of you guys do it?.
Can save me a couple of bucks doing it.. as long as the plug doesn`t get weaker from it ?. Guess not.

i had the same problem on 98 mountain srx .cold air kit,exh. deflector,and i put window screen on all the vents. when i get in powder the screen plugs up keeping snow off motor, seems good now
 
i wonder if your burning plugs because of rapid cooling when the powder hits the pipes and motor, I know when ever I would ride my bike into a big *** puddle I would fog plugs every once in awile.

what about streching nylons over your vents instead of tapeing.
