Wanna know if anyone else out there with 2002 SRX's have had a Tachometer fail on you.My Tach didn't work when I bought the sled.Fuel gauge and light works on it.Got another Tach and just plugged in the connector to see if it was working before I took the old one out.It didn't work either, but fuel gauge and lights works.
This is really bugging me now.I went thru the cable under the motor and pulled all the black tape off and the rubber sleaves off and inspected all the wires right up to where it goes into a bigger bundle of wires around the carb area.Re-taped it all over twice.Everything else works, headlights, speedo, dash lights,hi-lo beam, tail and brake lights, hand warmers and Thumb warmer.
Anyone with electrical knowledge let me know what to do now.Got 2 Tach's sitting here .Where does the wire that runs the Tach actually go,what is it tied into?

I had exactly same problen. It was bad wire under engine connecting to ground (Yel/red)

plug ins

just out of curiosity are the plug ins, where the wires connect the same color or is one blue and the other white.

gild ,the one in the sled now is blue on the tach to the white harness. The replacement tach I have is white on the tach to white harness, but it still does not work. Why you ask?

issues

I had a 01 MMax with a broken Tach, It was rolled and broken. Installed the proper Tach from parts list but it had a white connecter and the sled had a blue connecter. The fuel guage worked but the Tach didn't. I then installed my Tach from an 01 SXr which also had a blue connecter like the sleds and everything worked. Tried the ordered tach with the white connecter on my SXr and it didn't work also. We ordered 2 new tachs and they came with white connecters and the same thing , fuel guage but no tach. Dealer telephoned Yamaha and they said plugins must match and sent a tach with a blue plugin to match the sleds and everthing worked. I don't know if it was BS but it worked after trying 1 used and 2 new Tachs. You just blew that theory out of the park unless white plug Tack is broken

confusion

Not to confuse matters but is it the OEM tach on your sled and you did say it had the blue connecter on it like mine? I like to get the truth on these plug ins. because I know the white plug in tachs don't work on either of my sleds but the blue does. Whats the difference? If your Tach is OE maybe you need one like I got. I'll check with my Dealer.

tach

Apparently from what my dealer says the reason the tach with the white plug in did not work is because it does not have a resistor or processer or something that the blue plug in one has. Thats something Yamaha Tech has to answer.

Yeah but I was told that the Tachs from the 2001 would work.I bought one from a member on here and it is white end.The one in sled is blue end.Either of them work.I am getting F$%#^%g really ticked with these problems. So I have one of each and still no working one.

I checked the wiring from the Tach down to the connectors by the primary clutch.Checked each strand of wire, nothing bad anywhere.Need to figure this thing out.

do you have a tach signal in the wire? until you start checking wires with a digital multi meter you will never figure it out.

My sled's line with connector at end is white. The Tach in the sled when I bought it has a blue plug in.Bought a Tach off TY member here,it was from a 2001 SRX and comes with white plug in.So am I suppose to use the white plug in to the white connector on the sled.
mrviper...which wire do I test for power, the blue or the brown.Mind you the blue is sliced in to the blue wires from the light bulb in the Tach and the speedo and also water temp and the oil level lights. It is the main source of power. So power must be going thru to Tach. And the ground from the Tach is also associated with the grounds on all the rest of th bulbs also. This only leaves the brown wire which goes to the condenser, but actually goes to fuel meter also(and that works),so must be signal there also.
This is really weird.
I have a cheap anolog multimeter I can try and use.How would I go about testing the blue and brown for a signal.Never used one of these meters in my whole life.Just bought it because it was on sale 2 weeks ago.
I need to solve the Tach problem soon.Do I have to order another Tack, not with the price the dealer is asking...$300.00.

Also when I start my SRX,the lights flash on dash 3 times like it is supposed to.The only lights that flash are the water temperature and DCS lights. Is the oil light supposed to flash also.
Noticed the other day when I was driving near home, sled started to hesitate and bog on acceleration.I got a little scared and went home fast and shut it off. After 15 minutes started it up,but couldn't get it to go,sounded like running on 1 cylinder. It was smokin like crazy.I just kept pushing on the throttle until it had enough power to get into the garage.I thought I had blown the motor. Now at the same time my fuel gauge hand was on E(empty),and to my surprise there really wasn't much of any gas in tank. Not enough to suck thru filter and keep engine running.Got some fuel from my SXR and put in the SRX.Bingo the sled is running again..normal.My question is,is there supposed to be a warning light that comes on in the dash where the fuel gauge is to let me know I am getting low.Usually on my SXR when it is pointing on E,I still have at least another litre of gas in there.

I did the same thing last night when i was out riding... i too was used to my 600 SX i could almost get another 30 kms after i reached empty... when the SRX said it was empty... it was empty lol.

PS the oil light doesn't flash on my 2000. But it does work when the oil level gets low. Not sure if it's different on the '02's but it doesnt seem like it.

so let me get this straight changeup...you drive with tank on empty and oil on empty...not a good habit to keep.LOL
Well at least you know when things are empty.

lol actually yes it's this benchmark thing i do to make sure all the warnings work! I don't go too far on a sled until i know its limitations and make sure all the bells and whistles are working... that way if I ever get stuck in a jam i know everything is working and shouldn't have much of a problem... I like to figure out miles per tank of fuel and oil, and make sure the overheat light works. I try to rely on the guages and warning lights as little as possible.

no, not quite correct there, the tach signal comes from the yellow/black wire, it comes from the cdi box, you will have to unplug the connector and check and see if you have a voltage signal there or not, it should vary the voltage with your meter hooked up revving it up. The tach will work off any 2000-02 srx as long as they are off the 300 watt ign system, its when you try to use the old 175 watt ign. system tach you have problems.

if you dont have it at the plug, then move down to junction where hood hinge is and check it, nothing there move to cdi output wire(same color)

iI have a 98srx700 that the tach. quit working on for about a year and a half. I replaced the main wire harness and no luck. One day it started to bounce the needle around and it started to work.Still working today. the fuel gauge was also not going to full but it now is. I know this is not an answer to your problem. Just sharing my experiance. Rich.
