Any other SRX's with Tach not working...

hey mrviper.I don't want to sound dumb...but electrical is not my field of expertise.Where exactly is the CDI box mounted,it's a big mother of a box according to the wiring diagram.I have the service manual for the 2000 to 2002 SRX's on cd.The 2002 SRX model is SRX700G/SRX700SG and SRX700/SRX700S is the 2000 and 2001 model.Just want to look at the right wiring diagram.

I will try and do a test on the wires on the weekend when it gets warmer.Still in the - 30 to 35 C. range at night.Windchills anywhere from
-35 C. to -49 C. of late.Every time I run the sled in the garage when doors are shut and heat on,I almost pass out from the fumes, then have to crank open garage doors and lose the heat at the same time.

I might try to rig up some pipe adapters to the sleds exhaust pipe and then get an exhaust flex hose to fish it all out thru a small flapper in the overhead door just like service stations have.

no problem, its on the left hand footwell sitting on the sled, remove the 2 screws, 1 in top and 1 in side of gastank, then take out the hood strap screw and the panel(dash with vents) will move out of the way, the cdi box will be mounted there upside down.
Undo the connector first at the tach, check the yellow/black wire, start the engine up and see if you have a varying voltage signal, if not move down the hood hinge connectors and check same wire, if nothing there move to the cdi box and check same color wire coming from box.

hopefully I will find a broken wire near the cdi box and it will be an easy fix...not my luck!!.If there is no signal from the box,it can get pretty damn expensive to replace.Dealer pricing a friggin $500,money which I don't have to spend there.

Looking at the wiring drawing on line for an '02 srx, at the tach harness in the gauge pod, if you take your ohmmeter when its not running between b(lack) and the chassis you should get a low resistance, 1 or 2 ohms or less. On the b(L)ue wire with it running set meter to DC volts, as long as the load control relay is closed, you should get 12 to 14 vdc or so. If both those are ok, like MrV said, try and get your meter red lead on the y(ellow)/b(lack) wire and the black lead on the chassis somewhere. Set meter to dcv and rev the motor and see if you have a varying dc voltage there, if so, than I would think both your tachs are shot. They could be sensitive to power supply polarity problems and be damaged if initially hooked up wrong. Is that true MrViper?

the tach signal wire is the yellow wire with black tracer, this is the wire you need to check, this will tell you if you have the correct signal being fed to the guage harness, the blue wire feeds into the yellow/black as its the supply wire for the light, fuel guage etc. I wouldnt waste my time with the blue until you know for certian that the yellow/blk coming from the cdi box to the hood hinge juction plug then up to the tach harness has a good signal in it, this wire is directly responsible for the tach to work.

if you have a good signal then you can look at the guage harness it self, but if something was wrong there it would likely show up in the other lights and guage functions.

can't see how they could be hooked up wrong. They come pre-wired from the factory and the plug at the end just plugs in to the open end of the wire leading back to engine,cdi...whatever.No one has played with changing wiring positions.

as far as damage goes, if you hook up a 175 watt tach to the new system it doesnt work for very long............(poof) if the tach is from a 2000-02 sled it will work.

I am gone into the garage to look at the cdi box, maybe a wire is loose or broken there somewhere. That's my first move tonight. The testing with meter I will do later when I can run the sled outside without freezing my azz off.It is - 30 celcius right now as I type to you.

mrviper.I took the cdi box off the 2 bolts and there was black electrical tape on the yellow/black wire.Took the tape off and there is a slight spot someone must have sliced the plastic covering over the wire to put a tester on it.Wire is in tact, not broken. So now I know which wire it is.So I have 3 points to check out.

When I do my testing and there is a signal from cdi box, then I will splice a wire from the box and run it all the way to the y/b wire on the connector end where tach plugs in.If that makes the Tach go,proves wire is broken somewhere.

Waiting

Blu got ahold of Yamaha Tech in Toronto and he says the tachs are different in power. One is AC and the other DC. Asked a bunch more questions but havn't heard back. I will keep you posted.

Again, any tach from the 2000-02 srx works, they are all the same 300 watt ignition system, they never changed from ac to dc current in these 2000-02 srx's, thats false.

get a digital multimeter and check the signal , dont make a mountain out of a molehill, its simple.

mrviper..I will pu a digital multimeter soon and check it out ...no problemo.Funny like I said last night. When I took the cdi off the mounting screws, saw black electrical tape over the y/b wire.Plastic was pinched back on the wire, looks like someone was doing a signal test before.I'll have to do it and find out for myself. Will advise you what I find out by the weekend.
