i was wondering whats the easiest way to get more travel out of my rear susp without spending a ton of cash 2000 srx700
more rear travel on an srx

buy takeoff viper rear shocks
viper had a "recall" because peopel complained of the stiff ride. so many dealer / or owners have the original viper shocks.
they are not too stiff.
I bought the whole set front and rear for $100
I only put the rars on so far.
if you put viper on rear only . you need to raise the front about 1" ( flipping the front brackets over and lftf to right , or buy some brackets from BETHEVIPER I think
on the rear. the only thing you need to do is lengthen the transfer rods for the higher ride height. ( I did this by making 10mm extensions that were the same diameter as the rod where the bottom bolt threads in. This "bushing" effectively made the rods 10mm longer. then i dialed in the gaps of the transfer rods with various nylon bushing thicknesses that I made.
One thing I foudn was that suspension settig significanly changed the handling
with the FRA in the stiff position, the srx was VERY tippy ( not good for teh best cornering sled ever made)
but setting the FRA to the softest setting ( close to the shock as seen in the pic) made it corner on rails and also made the so called stiff viper shocks work great as this setting effectively reduces the spring rate and dampign rate with it's smaller lever arm.

yes viper shocks work great. did that to my 98 srx7 2 years ago. best thing i did to improve the ride, cheap too, $250 Canadian for both rear shocks and springs from the dealer and they only had 400km on them. i made sure i had a least 2 inch sit in and it handles like stock but rides 10 times better. i switched out my limiter straps at the front of the rail with SXR ones as well. i also added the 3/4" extension to my front Ohlin shocks as well to get a little more front end travel.
ps. forgot to mention, i also changed the thickness of the bottom spacers in my traction rods like above, but instead of replacing them i ground them down on a belt sander to 10mm.

the first year vipers had the recall. if your interested i would just call the yamaha dealers in your area. they might still have some sitting around or know of customers that might have kept them. otherwise you could call the salvage yards and get any viper or sxr rears shocks, someone might be able to correct me here but maybe even the ones off a venture, XT or an XTC might work. good luck.

i have some venture shocks all four for 200, for another 80 you can have the brackets below to bolt them on to the front, shipping would be another 20$
you will need to move your limiter straps to the other hole.
the transfer rods are too short, i have a longer set i will sell for 20 with the other stuff.

I would tell the dealer the shove it. They are not supposed to resell recalled items and profit the money. The dealer is already paid to replace the shocks for the customer, and then to turn around and make money off recalled items?!?!?!? I wonder what Yamaha would say about that situation. They should GIVE them away, not cheat the system and profit from it. but it is a win win situation I guess. It would never fly in a Ford dealer or any auto dealer

they were not a recall, it was an option offered to the owners if they were not happy with the way the viper rode. the parts were not defective just valved to stiff for some owners. not everyone changed them out. why shouldn't the dealer resell them if they wished. not sure but were the dealers reimbursed for the time involved switching the shocks out? that i don't know.

I don't know for fact, but I think the dealers were comensated for the labor to replace the shocks under this "technical service bulletin" ( knowledge learned from this board)
but the dealers were suppose to send the takeoffs back to Yamaha ( for disposal probably/unfortunatley)
so, they shouldn't technically sell them, but I think some dealers have done this.
bottom line, viper, or SXR is long travel and swaps out with minimal effort to make the srx ride much better. just need to find some at a good price.

I have the Ohlins front shocks on my srx, and just looking at the rear I can tell it's going to ride rough. I'll give the fronts a chance, but if I did make the swap to a viper rear, would it atleast ride better than my old Venom? I borrowed my old Venom a couple of weekends ago( srx getting new crank, piston/cylinder after 1 mile) and that thing doesn't take the bumps all that well. Maybe the Viper has more travel and better shocks then the Venom?

the facts are this, a dealer can do what ever they want with any warrenty item after 90days if it is not called back. the need to hold it for that time then it is thiers to do with what they want.
dealers made 0$ on the parts, just labor. what they do with them after that is their own buisness, it doesnt make them crooked. normal markup on parts is 40-50%, they made 0 markup on the upgrades and still had to carry the floor plan on inventorying these parts, pay a parts man to shelve them, sell them, bill them etc. still not seeing why they are crooks for finding a way to make a little money on the deal after the fact when yamaha didnt call them back.
