HELP! Pipes on a viper - are they really that bad?

Man! Mr. Viper! I thought I'd never catch or hear from you! Thanks to all of you guys for the info and confidence! This site is the BEST! So what kind of head do you preffer to run and how do I know what my compresion is? I am told by spec and manufacturer to run a 3 waffer + 1 waffer out of another gasket. What can I put together to give me that squish and compresion? It's good to know that not all piped vipers go up in smoke. I can use all the insight I can get. I wrench for a living but on fuel injected automobiles. I know there is a nack for the 2 stroke and I'm trying to figure it out, or at least get a grasp for it. Thanks again and please keep the info coming! Oh, about the head gasket for cooling, bender opticool, does it work or just scrap it and go with a different head?

What do you guys think of a mountain performance head? Is this on the right track of what I should be looking for to make these pipes work?

A A/M head is something to look into when running pipes on a Viper. For the reasons MRVIPER posted above, better cooling design than stock head and increased cooling capacity. If your pundering the idea of an A/M head I have a BLACK (NON Water-Rail Style) Peak Head with 2 sets of domes (19cc and 22cc) for $160 shipped but you'll need to buy a gasket kit from either MPI or Peak Perf. which run $25. This head will only work on 02-03 Viper cause its not DCS compatible, you could convert a 04-06 Viper to a NON DCS set-up but I dont see why anyone would cause its a nice feature to have. But if you didnt have any use for the 19cc domes which are for 6000ft-10000ft alt. and ported motor, you could send them to MRVIPER to remachined them to specs that would give ya the MOST RELIABLE set-up. I believe he charges around $25 per domes, but check with him.

On the mega power heads its all about having the correct squish angle ,radius, and piston work. This is what was done with addtional porting and piston mods to snoseekers viper, used to be Madmatts.

Just did some running with snoseeker yesterday. that sled is a riot. He tried the other spring in the primary, but went back to what was in there. It's all about holeshot with that sled. Gotta keep it square, the thing is so wild off the line it sometimes gets a little squirly.

You can set them up with Mega Power or SRX style heads and they work great also. I've set plenty up with stock heads and didn't have a problem either.

Spec, I've talked to you or one of you guys out there in SD. Will be calling you sometime this week to chat about this piping deal and some clutch parts and setup. Thanks for the info guys and keep it coming if you've got it. I desprately want to make this work without a total tear down or a blow up in the near future!

Anyone else or anymore input on the pipes? Winter is winding down and those pipes are calling my name on the bench. Looking for a few set-up tips or where to go for more set-up tips!

slp's!!! I have them for well around 4,000 miles. I went with the safe in mid range get around 10.5 mpg on average I run hard 85% of time (rich on mid range)Got the bug again after not riding in two years.I'm not a pro but I would go with slp's specs but up the nozzles alittle less mpg's but worth it. Like I said I'M no pro but it has been trouble free for me and I hold it for awhile before letting it go no problems thus far 6,000 miles on sled. (knock on wood!!!)

Oh, I have that same issue. Was 50* here and I was thinking it was time to pull the viper in the garage and get the pipes off the shelf and on the sled. I still need to decide what I am going to do for a head. I have DCS so I won't even start without a decision on a head. I am really torn what I want to do for a head, weighing the cost of the aftermarket head against what it offers vs the modded stock head with the opticool gasket. I was hoping I would have found something by now but I am still coming up short. I haven't seen any used aftermarket heads with DCS. I am not sure what SRX heads to look for that have provisions for DCS.

I've heard a lot of people not having problems with the factory yamaha head. Manufacturer for JAWS saw factory head, one extra waffer, no problem and never had a problem. I don't know what to think for sure. Wouldn't have a problem with running this set up but I wish I knew more on how to jet.

All I can tell ya is the STOCK Viper head WAS NOT DESIGNED for a triple piped 150hp motor, its was designed for a single piped 120hp motor. So if you want the most LIFE outta your motor I would suggest a HEAD MOD or A/M Head.

End Of Story
