hi everyone, sweet little forum. very informative. i'm new here thought I would post my setup. !998 XT 700, v-force reeds, reed spacers, dyno port can, head gasket mod, and maxximum clutch kit. front spring ic yellow-grey-yellow. the rear spring all i could see is blue. I don't know the helix angle or weight, but I think it was a aggressive trail kit. my mains are 143.8 pilot 45, and the other 1.0. the air fuel screw is out 1.5 turns. the sled scews pretty good. my questions are is there anything I can do to squeeze more power out of the sled? it runs real strong, but i'm always lookin for MORE POWER. I don't know the rpms off the top of my head, it does engage around 3500-3800. and I have seen it reving aroung 9000, but never really watched it long enough to see what it does from there. I do have a bit of a low end bog when you get on it strong from the start. I also noticed today that the secondary clutch has some free play in it, slides on the shaft about 1/16. it looks like it is missing a washer. is that ok?

sorry for the long post.

Shawn

Your wayyyy overreving. Your down about 6 -10hp. You should be 8500 rpm max. You need to add more primary weight to bring rpm,s down. That play is normal in the secondary so it can align itself.

thanks Turk. I'll get it out tomorrow and do some runs to see what the ACTUAL rpms are and post back. what I posted today was from memory. so the y-g-y is stock? the weight is probably stock as well. Is there a way to tell what helix is in there? how much and where sould the weight be added? I'm new to clutching, I had the MAXX kit installed by the dealer. thanks for you help.

Shawn

If your revving 9k the kit is not very good. Can,t do squat till I know exact rpm,s & the way the primary is set up.

thanks Turk, I do a run tomorrow and get the rpms. Is there a way to tell the helix angle and the weight thats on the rollers? again thanks a million!

Shawn

edit, if you missed it the primary spring is yellow-silver-yellow(stock i'm guessing) and the secondary is blue. helix unknown. it was about 5-6 years ago the clutch was done so I can't remember the numbers. the only thing i'm sure of is the KIT was a Maxximum kit.

you gotta dismantle the clutces to see how everything is set up. if your not a clutch tuner or done one before see if any locals can help.

well, i took a couple runs today. and sure enough as I thought, 8800-9000 rpm. somewhere in there, I cant really tell( i have the small hard to read gauges). this was from stop to wot(at around 80-85 mph). I couldn't go much faster than that the lake is pretty rough. I gotta find a smooth spot to get to top speed, but it usually runs about 105-108mph. It pulls like crazy though 0-80ish. what do you recomend I do Turk?

Shawn

well, I took the clutches off tonight. and here's what I found.

primary spring: yellow-silver-yellow
rollers: couldn't identify(probably stock)
weight: 8ch 3.6 3.6
Secondary spring: green
helix: 7ms7 (Maxx Perf)unknown angles
twist: 60*

I also think I need a new belt badly, it was pretty glazed. could this make the rpms go up?

I'm gonna replace the belt and clean up the clutches and go from there.
do these numbers help at all, or do you still need to know the weights?

What do you recomend I do Turk? This sled is fast, but I think if I can get the clutch dialed in it will really rip!

Thanks for you help Turk!

Try a new belt but break it in easy for the 1st 20 miles before you squeeze it. Wash the belt in warm water & dish soap 1st & then go play.

Belt ?

stupid question but, I wasn't paying attention when I took the belt off. So what direction do the arrows face? the front of the sled? Sorry sometimes I 'm just plain retarded. Please don't :ban: me! I like this place!!

Shawn

The belt can go on any way but must be installed the same way every time. That aroow is to make sure it is reinstalled the same way. Arrow points to front of sled.

season 2

ok fellas..Rather than starting a new thread, I'll just continue mine from last year. here goes! New year same problem. I never had a chance to work on my clutch last year(snow and Ice went fast), so now I'm stuck with the same problem. Over reving to 9000. I ran in the ice drags this weekend, and did ok. 80 mph in 660ft. I think if I get my clutch dialed in I could do better. So here goes 98 700 XT, mods are reed spacers, v force reeds, 1 layer head gasket, drilled stock pipe and a maxx clutch kit. carbs are setup with 142.5 mains, stock pilots, 1 3/4 turns on the fuel screw, needles second clip. plugs look good.

now to my clutch.
primary spring: yellow-silver-yellow
rollers: stock 14.5
weights: stock 8ch 13.9 13.9
Secondary spring: green
helix: 7ms7 (Maxx Perf)unknown angles
twist: 60*

I was thinking of trying the 98 700 sx race setup in the tech pages(51/43 Helix, 8-ca weights w/4.5g rivet 1st hole and 3.1g in tip, 2-3 engagement shims, stock spring primary, silver secondary), but I wasn't sure if it would work in MY sled.

so, would that setup work? or is there a better starting point I should try? I don't wanna go buy all this stuff if its not gonna work for me. I'm looking for the best clutch setup for lake racing and just hammering around. so any help would be great!! HELP ME CLUTCH GODS!

phew! that was alot to say!

Shawn

By all means run that setup , but install a white -silver- white primary spring(stock sx spring). but for lake racing you need to go to a 8cr or 8ch type, somthing that will give you more on top end. 8ca's are a short drag race weight!
