Stayed in Naubinway, on Thursday we rode thru Newberry (pics 1-3) to the Falls (pics 4-5), (had some awesome fish dip there), Paradise, Hulbert to Shirley’s for dinner (Pics 6-
(there were more deer there than I have ever seen at one time, it was feeding time too, three 80 pound bags of corn and three bails of hay, must have been 200 deer there easy) then back to Naubinway thru Rexton. Trails were GREAT, every time we turned onto a new trail it was groomed or we meet the groomer (Pic 9). Ride was 185 miles for the day.
Friday morning on the trail 9:30 AM, rode to McMillan for breakfast at the Poorboy and found out it has been closed down for a little over a year now . Had a burger at the place next door (home of the Bubba burger, really good food) and headed for Seney and the hot dog stand. Took a 10 min. break there, it was busy! (Pic 10) Trails were great up to G.M. Continued on to Grand Marais by way of trail 88, 888, and 8 (trail #8 sucked BAD!!!), got gas then went west on trail 89 toward Pictured rocks and back to G.M. for more gas and dinner. After dinner we headed back toward Naubinway by way of trail #8 (very rough due to large amount of traffic) to Pine stump to get gas. (The 96 V-Max 500 that rides with us only has a 10 gal. tank and only gets around 8.5-9 MPG if he keeps up with the rest of us. This means 85-90 miles before he’s out. He ran out about 1000 yards before the gas station in G.M. when we came from McMillan. Hence , the reason were always at a filling station or on the way to one). (Pic 11) We came to a trail intersection that said Pine Stump 16 miles one way and Newberry 30 miles the other, the V-Max said he could make it 30 miles to Newberry, we rode 17 miles to the next intersection and that sign said 30 miles to Newberry too. We rode until we found the Wolf Inn they have gas across the street (3.29/gal. for 87 or 92 oct.) He bought 3 gallons and we headed to Newberry. Filled up in Newberry and continued home to Naubinway (arrival time 10:30 PM, 13 hours and 267 miles later, good ride and a good day!).
Saturday we got up and went to the antique snowmobile show took some pics, (Pics 12-14) shot the shit and had breakfast. Some nice and interesting old iron there. Helped my brother in law change his burnt up Alt. on his van then rode to McMillan to play in this big open field with about 3 feet of powder in it again (Pics 15-1. On the way to the field just south of Newberry on trail #2 got pulled to the side by a couple of cops on sleds that had 2 ski-doo’s pulled over (giving tickets??) they told us to keep our speeds down, because the trails were very congested and had many icy corners, no tickets for us, just warnings. The trails were very congested and tore up. On the way home after playing in the field I hit a deer, leading the pack at about 55-60 mph when all of the sudden he was in full stride across the trail right in front of me (no warning at all) grabbed a hand full of brake and just got slowed down enough to only hit his hind leg with my left ski and tripped him (Pic 19), he went sliding off the trail between two trees and got up ran back across the trail and stood there and looked at us for a minute and then ran back across the trail and into the woods. Really freaked me out, close one!! This was about 10 or so miles away from home. Putted back to Naubinway for a 90 mile round trip ride for the day.
For the three days we put 541 miles on and only had one out of gas situation and one close call. We figure that between the 4 of us we went thru about 50 gallons of gas each and that adds up to $500 just for gas at 2.50 / gal. (we spent 2.75 -3.29 / gal. in some spots). If we add oil for the sleds, food, gas for the trucks and so it kinda gets out of hand for 541 miles of riding. This really can be an expensive sport, but I love it!! -Ed

Thanks be to the groomers. Glad I didn't eat the deer too. I really wasn't that hungry at the time. -Ed
