How do you change the pump on a 1997 XTC 600 twin? Is it hard to do? My friend went through 2.5 gallons of oil in 528 miles. Do you think his pump is shot? I can't even stand to ride behind him it burns my eyes.

First i would check to see if all settings are good, is cable pulled up
from it's seated position? is it adjusted right????
If everything checks out ok setting wise the pump may be shot,
PM sandmanmike1 he just changed one on his vmax.

Sounds like it is on full all the time. As Daman mentioned, this happens if the cable is hung up or not adjusted properly.
They don't normally fail but when they do, they usually go to the full setting. There is a little pin in there that wears, breaks or gets out of position.

I did one that Terret supplied a replacement for that the sled was not using oil at all. The D shaped drive was completely rounded off. The pump turned when it was in the off position but locked up when throttle was opened.
Your certainly sounds like a mechanical issue or way out of adjustment. The replacement new is like $140 or so. Much cheaper than motor parts.

yup actually a pretty common part on these yamaha's for some reason. When they wear out they go to full stroke and use a ton of oil. Replace it and reset the gap and you will probably find it uses much less oil. Make sure to bleed the system after replacing!
