I know about the recall. If you take the heads off can you tell if the ring is about to catch? I am confused because I thought that all piston rings spin. They snap on the cylinder right? May be I am not gettin it. Or that they are not locked in by the piston. Can someone clear this up for me thanks.

Well 2 stroke rings in the Yamaha's at least are pinned so they do not spin.
See http://www.mykeeshond.com/snowmobile/Engine-rebuild/007_17A.jpg for what it looks like after it spins and is driven for another 30 minutes. This is the good one http://www.mykeeshond.com/snowmobile/Engine-rebuild/005_19A.jpg
These are large pictures so sorry in advance if it takes a while to download. I figure the detail is worth it. You can see the damage is obvious. The non damaged one you can make out the ring pins. They are located at on the ring lands right above the vent hole the lower is at about 11 o'clock and the upper is at 1 o'clock. The rings are notched at the point they meet to allow room for the pin.
Basically the sled will work just fine and usually fail before 2000 miles. Mine failed at 5900 miles or so. It will cost about $300 to fix if you do it yourself before it goes using Yamaha parts. A bit less if you go the OEM route. Plan on $200+ per cylinder if it fails plus the $300 in parts mentioned above.

Is the details of this recall posted somewhere on the Internet?

I called Yamaha Motor a few years ago when mine broke and the CSR that I spoke to had no idea what I was talking about. Maybe the dealers know.

I would just order up the parts and do it,why chance it..
It was the pin that holds the ring in place that would work its way out and catch the port. had a 97 XTC 600 blow up under warrantee, now has 11500 miles on it.
