trailing arms

i have an 02 viper er. when i bought it the left side trailing arm had a dent in it, and i still have the same one on there and seems to be holding up fine. hit a tree last week and bent the right side trailing arm pretty bad. called around all the dealers and they all told me $$232 for a new one. i called a snowmobile shop close to me and they said they had aftermarket ones for a sx, sxr, srx,for $$80 but not for a viper. so i went to my neighbor who has a srx and an sxr, and measured the trailing arms, and measured the left one on my viper. the only difference is the ski post is taller on my viper, so i bought the $80 one for the sxr, and made a 1.5" spacer and put it on the ski post, and put the trailing arm over it. went out after and it seemed to work perfect.

i went out today. was goin down the trail, 35-40 mph, came to a rough section of trail, got the skis off the ground off a mogul, and my right ski came down on the face of the next one, i figured no big deal its happened plenty of times before, but after the steering felt wierd. pulled off and the inside of the trailing arm kinked out. somebody on HCS told me that maxxperf.com had aftermarket ones for pretty cheap, but it seams like their site is down or something??

anybody know of another place where i can get one or if there is some kind of difference in the trailing arms that i might have missed ??

aftermarket arms are very cheap. i would buy used oem before new aftermarket i have a used left hand one for $135 shipped and a brand new right side for $190 shipped let me know if interested they are for the viper so they will fit right with no spacers or anything and they are both oem

Go with stock Yamaha parts like viperking said. My brother-in-law did the same thing you did, bent his after market arm just going over bumps on the trail. I just saw a right hand T-arm go for around $60 + shipping on e-bay earlier today. I bought my used one in the classifieds here on TY last month. The letter at the spindle end of the T-arm is the ID marking, you need a "M" for the viper. -Ed

hey sheer i bought that arm on ebay today the price was $66.01 and $15 for shipping it's about the cheapest one i've ever seen. another right side sold on there for $132.50 and a left for $148.50 both plus $15 shipping and this one brought $66. i think it's because he wouldn't accept paypal

I seen you bought it (athundercat1000). Have you had a chance to repair mine yet?? I have been watching for the pics of the process that you had mentioned to another member you were planning on posting. -Ed

I don't think I have any pics of the kink in the back of it as I didn't take any pics after it was removed from the sled. Sorry, It was a quite large kink. -Ed

I perfer aftermarket ones over the stock. Been using them since 97. With the round tube design type, if you bend one it can be straightened very easy. Using a vise, couple blocks of wood, and a length of pipe. Also they dont "kink" like the stock ones can. (unless you really whack it!) There is less likely to be tunnel damage when the sled takes a hit, because of the flexability of the aftermarket arm. (the energy has to go somewhere)

Can you post a picture or a link for these "round tube design type" after market style T-arms? I have not seen or heard of them, who makes them and how much do they cost? I have only seen the lightened T-arms that are round tube style and they cost a bunch. -Ed

Mine are from Mountain Performance. They are the chrome moly type. I believe Fabcraft also sell them. Cost used to be about $400 a set, about the same as OEM Yamaha ones. Not sure how much they are now though, as I havn't had to buy some for about 4 years now.
It may be a little more difficult to find aftermarket parts for the 2 stroke Pro-action chasis. Seems they're starting to focus on the 4 stroke stuff more now.
