Another Question :-)
Put in new case, chain and sprockets on My 98 XTC 700.
First time Attempted-
1. When i engage there is a half second quick jerk like it is slipping or ?
I thought I tightened enough(how do you know).
Just drove it for a minute, did not want to hurt anything.
2. Replace the sprockets and chain with a different ones. Topo one is bigger than what was on it. Does this gear it down/slower?
Thanks for the help!!

Make sure you have the proper chain for those gears. Recheck adjustment.

Remember your 10spd??? What is this?
I tightened it to where it was before - off a parts sled.
Drove it.
Then tightened a lttle more.
Too tight now?
Also has the M-10 on it. I loosened the track to get the chain case on. Did not tighten back quite as much because it seemed to pulling so hard on the lower driveshaft cogs?
ideas......

He's giving you an example of how the bigger/smaller top gear relationship works. Your top gear is the same as the front gears on your bicycle and the bottom is the same as your rears.
Now for your problem. Is the chain the same pitch as the gears? Hyvo will not interchange with non-hyvo. The teeth of the gears will not properly mesh with the chain. Other than that .............. Are you sure it all went back together in the right order?

The chain and gears came out of 97 600 twin - the came together.
It did seem like the lower gear had a little space between the washer(like the gear was not flus wit hthe end of the sahft) when i tightened the bolt. I put on the same spacer as was on their, behind the gear.

Tough to diagnose over the computer. I'm out of ideas without actually looking at/hearing it run. Good luck.

You had better make sure things are right down there before riding it because it could come apart and that would be a real mess. You can look up what # link chain go with the sprocket combo you have. But usually the longer chain just makes a longer snake in the chain which in-efficient. You could lay a straight edge from face to face of the gears to make sure in the in out alignment.
The 10spd comment was just a way to remember what happens to your gearing. The top one is the same a the front sprocket on a bike. Or you can remeber the smaller the pulley diameter on the drive axle the higher faster the output rpm. Opposite is true for the top.
