Has anyone had the starter pulley break on them? (the piece the recoil grabs onto when you pull it) Was out riding today and shut the sled off because I got stuck, then when I went to start it I pulled the rope and nothing and it stayed out. Then I opened the hood and looked down, the starter pulley broke and got stretched straight out and it went through the case. A big piece broke off around the timing hole. There is also two cracks one headed towards the front and another towards the back. Is it OK to keep running it like that without the case being all there and those 2 cracks? We did pull the pieces out and I rode it home by starting it with a rope around the clutch. Let me know your opinion on the situation.

As long as the breaks don't extend down into the crankcase, and the stator is alright you can run it. I have a 97 SX700 where the recoil did the same thing, there is a hole the size of your fist, on the back side up the upper crankcase. I bought a new used recoil on line, and it mounts with 3 bolts only, but starts and runs like it should. I purchased another set of cases, intending to swap out, but it is a lot of work, and expense with all the gaskets and seals, so I have been postponing it. Loctite the cage that mounts on the flywheel, I suspect that this is what came loose.
