Hi, guys,
I think my engine is done. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My Sled is a 1998 Yamaha VMAX SX 600 with 2100KM.
Was riding last weekend on the beach (all out) and then total loss of power and the engine just died. Changed spark plugs and it started but I shut it right off because it sounded like only one cylinder was firing.
Took it apart last night and this is what I found
Looks like the rings came apart? Suggestions?
I'm guessing I need: New heads, jug, and piston. (how do you get the cross pin out?)
Now, can I rebore/machine the cylinder or do I need a new one?
How much am I looking at?
Where is the best place to get the parts? I'm in Toronto if that helps.
Hopefully, I can get this finished before the snow melts
Thanks again,
Mike

It is possible to put a big bore in your sled, but its gonna cost $$$ then you'll have to rejet and clutch.
IF you have this cylinder bored then you will have to have the other cylinder bored to keep things balanced between the two. You are definately going to need a new head.
You need to be positive that the rings are the cause, because if you have bearings coming apart in the lower end they tend to travel through the transfer ports and wind up on top of the piston and make a mess like that too. Do you have any snowmobile mags handy? There are advertisers in the back that specialize in this type of cylinder fixing like Millenium Technologies, Nika tek, oh gees the mind is going blank.... If you have the funds you will be back in business in about a week, its all up to you..T

Thanks for the quick reply,
I'm hoping it's the rings, they were all shreaded up and in a few pieces.
My sled only has 1200 miles on it. So I think it could be do to the fact that I was wide open for a while, and the low oil light just came on.
Would this cause this type of ring failure?
Thanks again,

If the light came on your shouldn't have been Out of oil unless your light is malfunctioning. I would assume you blew the ring as well. I would get them replated, or you could have them bored and sleeved (one or both if need be) Plateing is the best option if possible. If i remember the Pistons should be about 88-100 for a kit for each side w/ rings wristpin and snap rings. Then you'll need new gaskets as well.

Sounds like the old classic '97 ring pin issue, looks like the ring spun
and caught the port?? thats not an oil issue you have, when the light
comes on you still got 1/8 -1/2 qt left..

yup, looks like pin came out - and the ring gap turns into the port and catches the port.daman said:Sounds like the old classic '97 ring pin issue, looks like the ring spun

Looks just like mine did when it went.
I think it was the rings,
well, called the dealer and over $1500 in parts, but the guy at the counter gave me a local shop that has all the parts in stock.
Reman. Jugg
new pistons with rings and wrist pin
used head
Should be about $600 dollars CAD
Going to change both pistons and rings as suggested
Thanks alot guys, I'll let you know how it goes.
