Viper head mod ?

I have a set of bender pipes on the way and i called Bender to ask about their head mod and was told it must be done on my sled because it has DCS . They said my sled will not rev over 6500 RPM with out it ? Has anyone else experienced this problem ? Also does anyone out there have a head for sale that is modded or would like to trade it for a non modded head ?
 
I just installed Bender pipes on my Viper S, Bender is right. Cruising no problem but as soon as i hit the gas the dcs light comes on. I'm going to be looking for an aftermarket head rather than getting the origianal modified. Just in case i sell the sled, i can put it back to origianal.
 
Yes that is true because the vipers have way too much timing to run safely on pipes with stock head setup. The real solution is too run an srx box and remove a lot of the timing, but cutting the head for even compression (makes the center and mag domes the same size as the pto) is a band-aid that works too.
 
I've been running my 02' Viper with bender pipes for 2000 miles now with no head mod, should I be expecting soemthing soon in regard to deto or not. It runs great with great MPG. I'm thinking of going with a mega power head instead of the modded stoker. Is it true the mega will have better cooling?
 
I had the same conversation with bender quite a while back. There is another thread or two on it. Even if you have your current head modded you can still return the sled to stock with that head. You will just have to jet accordingly. At 6500 RPM I don't think it has to do with the Viper timing spike. I have heard different theorys. One of them is that the detonation sensor is so sensitive that the ping of the triple pipes set it off. I do think there are a few that ran benders without the head mod and DCS with good results. One of them luck of the draw things I guess. Given my typical luck I am going to get the head mod done before I even try the pipes. My benders are sitting in a box in the garage and have been all season.
 
I am under the impression the head mod not only reduces the compression ratio across the board but also corrects the DCS coming on prematurely .That will occur only those equipped with it . those without DCS should run fine but dont benefit from the DCS feature ,which if working correctly on an engine with pipes can be a real lifesaver .
By the way this is just my assumption on this and I am by no means an expert on this subject .
 
I don't know if the Peak head is still available, but I think it had a provision for the DCS. The Mega Power heads did not, but are probably the best ones available for cooling. If you run a set of EGT's, you could forget about the DCS.
