I can pick up a 98 SRX with about 4000 miles on it for cheap. I called the dealer and the crank was never welded or replaced on it so I am kind of going back and forth on this. I have run 98 and 99's but both that I've owned have been welded by the dealer. Am I going to index the crank on this trail riding or did they mostly have the issues with dragging or modding these? Should I shy away from this? I called around and they told me around $600 to weld it up. Should I pass on this one? Weld it? or run it stock?

They came apart on alot of stock machines.I would pick it up and get it trued and welded.Once they are welded they are really reliable.

i'd pick it up if it's cheap. my 98 crank was never welded and it didn't go until about 7000kms. after i got it welded i put 6000 trouble free kms on it with no issues.

i mam pretty sure yamaha dealers will fix it for free... it was recalled????

Recall is expired

They won't honor that recall anymore....too old. MRVIPER700 did mine for me when he did the motor work. Ask him how much and have the crank seals replaced at the same time.

I don't know how they can get away with not honoring the reacall anymore.. a RECALL is a recall.. if you live anywhere around Chicago, I have a friend thats a yamaha dealer that i could call and find out for sure!!!

Call him Gary..

Yea i know i just got a recall fixed on my '99 pick up last year,,but
maybe yamaha don't do things like the automakers do...

Call him up and see what he says Gary. I called 3 dealers and they told me no-go. I asked why shouldn't they, it was a manufacturers defect. Then they told me it wasn't a "RECALL". I asked how I had my other 2 cranks welded under a "RECALL" and he then tells me Yamaha won't go back that far.

Liability

It's all about liability boys. This crank recall is not a liability because it is not a safety issue. If this recall had been on the TORS or the brakes or somthing like that then I'd be willing to bet that they would still honor it. The fact of the matter is that if this crank comes out of phase the sled will run like crap, if it runs at all, but nobody is going to get killed or injured as a result. It's all about liability and cost/benefit analysis. No way can a manufacturer honor a recall like this FOREVER! Safety issue, yes but no way on this one. Pure economics. I'm sure when Yamaha issued the recall they put a time limit on it. Ask as many dealers as you want....they are all going to tell you the same thing. If you find out that I am wrong I'll eat my words!!!

YAMAHA WON,T HONOR THIS RECALL ANYMORE. IT SIMPLY SHOULD OF ALREADY BEEN DONE PROBLEY IN 98 OR 99. THE DEALER CAN TELL YA IF THE WORK WAS DONE, BUT ONLY THROUGH YAMAHA RECALL. I KNOW A GUY THAT HAS 98 600 SRX THAT YAMAHA WOULD NOT COVER. HE BOUGHT SLED A FEW YEARS AGO. IT BASISLY BEEN TOO LONG AGO NOW. AGAIN SAFTEY ISSUE WOULD BE WHOLE DEFFERENT STORIE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

It was a service bulletin, not a recall, a recall is safety concerned!! The only recall I remember was the spindal tubes back in 1997 on sx sleds, the cranks in the srx was a service bulletin and not all of them needed service.
Like others have said, no dealer is gonna cover this now, yamaha will simply say its too old.

I have a 98 SRX which I purchased 5 years ago. I tried to have the crank done at that time and they wouldn't cover it. I never did get the crank done and its still holding true. I have 13,000 km on it now. Maybe I got lucky. Most people that experince problems with them noticed it very early on.

He told me to tell you to TAKE THE VIN NUMBER to the dealer and ask them to put a claim through the system... The dealer DOESNT KNOW if YAMAHA will accept it UNTIL you put the vin number through the system... It depends on the NUMBER of the sled.... It only takes a FEW MINUTES for the dealer to SUBMIT THE CLAIM and they will know INSTANTLY if the claim went through.. it generates some NUMBER and the dealer repairs it with that number!!!! There you go!!!

I BOUGHT MY 99 SRX 700 BRAND NEW AND MY DEALER SENT ME A NOTIFCATION THROUGH MAIL ABOUT POSSIBLE DEALER WARRANTY WORK ON CRANSHAFT. I ASSUMED PROBLEM WAS ONLY ON 98 MODEL, BUT DEALER TOLD ME IF YOU USE TRACITION PRODUCTS, 99 SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKED. DEALER RECALLED MINE,THEY HAD MY VIN # RIGHT ON POST CARD. 3:16 (yammie tony)
