To extend or not to extend?????

Guys I'm looking for some/any advice here.....this summer I'm definitely changing my Viper...but..I'm absoutely torn between extending to a 136 or 144 or, I'd like to beef up the suspension because I definitely ride harder than then sled's stock suspension wants me to. I mostly ride in the mountains (I can leave from my backyard and be in the mountains in a half-hour) however, I love the way the viper handles as a 121.....any suggestions please???
 
i extended my viper to 136" and would not go back, however if your going for only the hills go 144" much more track. the 144 will not handle nearly as well as the 136 but the 136 wont float as well as the 144.

I had a 121, then extended it to a 136 x 1-1/2"
this winter I went to a 144 x 16" x 2" ski doo take off, never look back
 
How about gearing/drivers/clutching set-up? Are many changes needed after the conversion? and are the set-ups different from 136 to 144?? thanks
 
clutching set-ups will be different for both tracks, and elevation would affect it too. gearing changes will be needed with both and drivers will have to be changed to 8's if you wanna go bigger than 1.5" lugs. if you are just buying 136" rails then you just bolt everything on the new rails and drill 4 new holes for the skid. if you go this way give me a p.m. and i will give you the dimensions i used to extend mine.
 
Redsnake what made you decide to go with the 136" rails rather than the rail extensions? I'm sort of leaning toward the extensions as there are a few available for sale...

can anyone compare the handling between a 136 and 144??
 
The 136" rails are slightly stronger that rail extensions because it is one less joint to weaken the setup, but tracksusa extensions are amazing and if i was going to use extensions they are the ONLY ones i would use. If you can find tracksusa extensions use those. It is definately less hassle then getting 136 rails, cheaper too.
 
i went with the rails because of the cost. $0.00 my buddy had a 136" sled but he was more suited for the 121" so we traded. the full length rails are stronger like yamaholic said, but other than that i would have used extensions myself.

will fit but you gotta drill new holes and move the suspension mounts rearward and down or up(i cant remember off hand)
 
W-Arm holes are the same , Center shaft holes need to go back about 6 in. Rear needs to have drop brackets installed . I do have a template .

For you guys who have extended....did you use drop brackets or keep the original skid position?

Also.....does anyone know where I can get a set of front shock relocation brackets? I'm looking to gain height on the front end....I find that decending from steep climbs the Viper's belly drags on the ground and also when I pound hard into moguls...
 
i used the stock mountain max rear mounts, everything else was the same. since your viper is an 04' i would suggest getting some 05' mountain skies to solve the front end diving.
 
So I'm assuming that the mountain max mounts will drop the suspension a few inches. The mountain skis are definitely a great idea and may be in the near future for me, however, the problem I'm having is not in the powder, its on the harder stuff...I need my front suspension lifted up a few inches to gain some more ground clearance...
