Hi guys,

i have an 02 Sx Viper 700...

i want to get rid of the big bulky airbox...how do you feel about separate filters?

do they work?
increase speed?
trail legal?

also is there a clutch kit out there that is the best for a 185-200 pound rider?
 
Not sure about the separate filters . I would think they would defeat the purpose of the forced air induction the sled has . Im sure they would look cool and be a lot easier to work around though . As far as the clutch I put a bender kit on mine and am really impressed with it . It hits real hard and the backshift is strong . They dont tell you the specs on any thing in it . Thats the only thing I dont care for . There is so many guys on here with mounds of wisdom when it comes to clutching .I bet if they chime in you can get some real good advice on how to do it and save alot of $ .Good luck
 
I have a 03 viper. I added a Dalton 53/43 helix with a 70 wrap, torque limiter and 144 woody gold diggers center. Great trail setup, no loss of power anywhere and easy. There are several other kits out there for the viper: HH with rivets and Advantage helixs with other rates. Your seld will be different from all vipers due to weight, setup and other mods.
 
I agree.... I think you might be surprised at the gains had by simply putting on a torque limiter and then aligning everything all the way back..Then take it from there.
 
alright thanks for the clutch help but what about getting rid of the stock airbox and getting K&N filters?
 
I can't help you there, sorry. But I will say that the last year that i had my mm700, i did that airbox mod where you hole saw a bunch of holes in the airbox, put those SLP circular air hole/screens in the dash and rejetted... it made only a very slight difference in performance but intake noise was MUCH louder..even annoying at certain speeds/rpms....it would just resonate (spelling?) inside my helmet and would drive me crazy sometimes. So based on that, I won't be touching my Vipers airbox. But I'm sure guys on here have done it and can help you out...good luck.
 
the forced air induction isnt really forced air induction. at speed it will build under hood pressure that in theory will generate 3hp gain, you can't prove it on a dyno. post for btv or spec and see what they say about it. i know guys who run k&n on the grass and swear they give you more hp but for trail riding jetting may be hard to nail down.
 
Yah, those forced air scoops don't even run to the air box, so they aren’t going to have any cause/effect on loosing the air box. They just seem to run to the underside of the hood, not sure what benefit that provides. At least that’s way it looks on my 03 Viper.
 
Leave the airbox

Unless you want to get into a bunch of tuning leave the air box alone. Don't forget guys that on a viper the carbs are vented into the air box which is good for about 10 numbers on the main jet. Getting rid of the "big bulky air box" is not as easy as it sound and will require jetting changes too. It's just not worth the hastle. If separate filters were better Yamaha would have built it that way.....they do have some pretty good engineers ya know. Just get used to looking at it. Oh, and on another note.....air boxes don't freeze up from snow dust but separate filters do.

madmatt, i would have to disagree that airboxes dont freeze up but you are right on the airbox doing more than just getting air to the carbs. it has been engineered to keep equal amounts of air going to each carb and equal temps.
 
Leave the airbox. Close off the hole in on the underside of the hood,take out the plastic air induction tubes and block off the part that goes to the motor compartment,cut a hole so they force air into hood and airbox. Use holtzman for jetting and you have forced air that really works.proven by nec. clutch changes
 
Ya know something...I did the forced Air mod and put the powder screens on them...also put a smaller windshield on and to be honest...I didn't notice any
performance gains...it kinda made me re-think if I did it right...the worst was
in really cold situations -25...I'd always be worried about it leaning out on WOT runs...
However...Later I added the torque limitor and although it was my last ride...my smile was ear to ear...I thought I wouldn't feel a difference...but I did..and surprisingly...even less vibration if you can imagine that on a Viper...
I will be looking into the 53/43 green with the Heel Clickers this year and possibly some other mods...I will admit...I've always been interested in the tempa or Veri flow systems...but I'm not that daring enough...
 
We Have Run The Tempa Jet On Vipers W Pipes Fo Years Trail And Lake Just Jet For -25 And It Does The Rest. Midrange Is The Best, Spot On Jetting. It Is Best To Set It Up With An Egt. You Can Really Feel The Torque, This Should Work Great W Clickers. The Torque Helps A Lot If The Backshift Is A Little Slow.you Can Even Set Up So Midrange Is Spot On And Wot Will Be A Little Rich To Cool You Down
 
Hmmm interesting Mr. Lake...Unfortunetly we can't pipe our machines up here...Well you can...but its frowned upon by the law...any advice on non piped vipers?..
 
Work Good On Stock Sleds Too. Even Though They Are Less Affected By Jetting.air Box Mod Works Great Too. Yamaha Must Have This In Mind If You Look At The Hood By The Headlamp You Can See Casting For Door Or Flap Of Somekind.you Can Even Make A Hinge To Open Or Close Blockoff If Its Really Cold Or Really Dusty. I Did This And It Works Great
