picked up a 98 srx700 end of last season, I got to ride on once and i noticed the sled accelerated great but only til 60-65 mph.
The srx is all stock has 31xx mi on it , would this be the clutch not shifting to high??

The track is a bit worn and it holeshots 8300-8400 , would this be the secondary clutch?

It does sound like the clutching is way off but keep in mind the 98s servio moter for the power valves fail after a while but you should be seeing more speed than that. The primary might be binding as well.Father len

I just picked up a 01 SRX a few weeks ago and the first thing I did was go through the clutchs to find out what was what. Some people dont consider clutch changes as mods, so Id find out what your stock set-up is suppose to be for info purposes. Then dig into your primary and secondary and post info such as:

PRIMARY:
Primary Spring Color
Weights used
Rivets used

SECONDARY:
Helix#
Secondary Spring Color
Degree in which the Sec Spring is wrapped

And Im sure one of the many gurus of the site will help ya out.

by the looks of the clutch face you have a real problem with the clutching, get a yamaha belt and take the clutch apart because it looks like either the weights or the rollers are shot. when you have the clutch apart the weights will have a 3 digit code, post it up. looks as if a belt was shreaded at one time so your gonna wanna check the alignment also.

take that after market belt off and toss it in the trash. Clean those clutch faces and by the looks of your primary sheave, I can see marks on the inner shaft, I would bet your center bushings on that cover are shot. This is the maybe holding back the shift. There maybe other factors....servo, stuck power valves, bad stator, crank bent or twisted if not welded...

I am pretty much leaning towards the clutch, I checked the power valves , they seem to be working, no cables are pulled.

I will order up 2 new yamaha belts and take the clutch apart

I did find peices of a old belt so I am guessing the pervious owner broke a belt.

Alignment and center to center are critical as well. Best way to check them is to get the offset and alignment tools. Not sure if anyone still has some of the maxximum performance ones left since they went out of business or not, check with allen ulmer (srxspec) as he acquired some of their leftover product. My guess is that something is binding up in those clutches. Check all bushings including the cover and sliding sheave bushings, the helix bushing and sliding sheave bushings in the secondary, the condition of the rollers and roller pins in the primary, the weight surfaces and weight pins in the primary, get a new primary spring (may want a different one if you plan on changing setups, or order a few if you want to play around). Wash the clutches with hot soapy water and a hard bristled brush. While washing use a scotch brite pad to slightly rough up the sheave surfaces for good belt grip. Blow the clutches dry with compressed air. Once you do all that we can move on to the next steps.

Does anyone know if the secondary spring should be very soft when compressing compared to the primary which is alot harder??

Yes that's normal. How much softer it should be can't really be said. Tell us what color spring it is and somebody should be able to tell you the free length of the spring. How many miles and riding seasons on the spring? The springs do "sack out" after many miles or years.

Is it the angle or the shadow of the pic but the gap between the clutches shoud be over a inch between them? What number is on that belt?

as far as i know i am guessing the spring are orginal, less then 3500 miles.
Primary is black with green
sec is black with red

That primary spring is called a G-G-G primary spring (they are ALL black coils if its a yamaha spring, aftermarket are usually different color coils). The secondary spring is called just a red sec. spring. Again the coils are always black if its a yamaha spring.

EVERYTHING IN THOSE PICTURES IS STOCK CLUTCHING FOR 98 SRX. PRETTY RARE SOMEBODY LEFT CLUTCHING ALONE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Even if not that rare, pretty damn stupid for how those things were clutched from the factory! lol

well I cleaned the heck out the everything, I think i am going to do some upgrading to the clutch, everything seems alittle worn anyways, any sugestions? guess i should look at a clutch kit, and some new belts
